Batman '89's New Joker Gang Includes a Prince-Styled Villain

Two villains' costumes from the upcoming Batman '89 comic series were inspired by a Prince music video.

Artist Joe Quinones shared some character designs for the upcoming series, which includes some of Joker's henchmen. Two of the women are wearing t-shirts labeled with the words "ALL THIS AND BRAINS" and "ALL THIS AND BRAINS TWO." This is similar to the dress worn by one of the dancers in Prince's "Batdance" music video, which has the words "ALL THIS AND BRAINS TOO" written across it. Prince's video, in turn, is a reference to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which features a female news reporter wearing a top with the same phrase.

However, Twitter user Speed Breaker pointed out that the two women also resemble Delia Dennis and Deirdre Dennis, better known together as the villainous Dee Dee. The granddaughters of Harley Quinn, the two joined the Jokerz and wreaked havoc across Gotham City in the year 2040. They appeared in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and two episodes of Justice League Unlimited.

Batman '89, written by Sam Hamm and illustrated by Quinones, was announced along with Superman '78. The two digital-first comic series are inspired by the films of the same name: Michael Keaton's Batman (1989) and Christopher Reeve's Superman (1978). Both titles will debut six digital chapters on July 27, with an additional chapters arriving on a weekly basis for six weeks. Once all 12 chapters have debuted online, they will be collected into six physical comic books, which will release between August and October. The hardcover collected editions will hit shelves in October for Batman '89 and November for Superman '78.

Official synopses for each title are below:

Continuing the twisted adventures of DC’s Dark Knight from Tim Burton's seminal classic Batman movies, Batman ’89 brings in screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director. The gothic mentality behind the world, while still rooted in a sense of realism, helped inform many of DC’s global fans’ first impressions on the Dark Knight's Gotham. In the new Batman ’89 comic, Hamm and Quinones will help usher in the return of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and will debut a new Robin! Plus, Quinones has a vision for Harvey Dent/Two-Face that is as close to movie magic as a comic can get!

And in the vein of DC’s plans for Batman ’89, Rob Venditti (Hawkman) and Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66) will collaborate on Superman ’78 to tell stories set within the world Richard Donner and Christopher Reeves created in Superman: The Movie. In Superman ’78, bystanders are surprised and delighted by Superman’s abilities, and Lois Lane doesn’t (yet!) know that Clark Kent is secretly Superman. The sheer thrill of seeing a man fly, leap, or stop a bullet will be reflected in this environment where Superman has just been introduced! Inspired by Donner’s classic, timeless style of superhero storytelling, in Superman ’78Venditti and Torres will show fans that a man can truly fly.

The first chapters of Batman '89, by Sam Hamm and Joe Quinones, and Superman '78, by Robert Venditti and Wilfredo Torres, go on sale July 27 from DC.
