Cube -- a Japanese remake of director Vincenzo Natali's 1997 sci-fi horror film of the same name set to arrive this October -- has dropped its first trailer, with the project having previously been kept under wraps.
"It is my great pleasure to announce that I am the executive producer of the Japanese remake of Cube with an astonishingly talented cast and director, Yasuhiko Shimizu," Natali wrote on Twitter, sharing a link to the film's official website, where the trailer can be viewed. According to Variety, the film was shot in October and November of last year ahead of its official announcement this month. Like Natali's original Cube, Shimizu's remake follows a group of strangers who are forced to figure out an escape plan after being trapped in a mysterious cube-shaped maze armed with deadly traps.
The original Cube premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in Sept. 9, 1997, gaining a cult following in both the United States and Japan following its wide release in September of 1998. The film spawned a sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, and a prequel, Cube Zero -- which released in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Back in 2015, a remake titled Cubed was reported to be in the works at Lionsgate, though the project has evidently remained in limbo ever since.
"No one can resist the powerful system of the Cube," Shimizu said in a statement. "In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What lurks in the abyss of the self -- hope or despair? You will soon be in the Cube with us. In fact, you may already be in it."
Directed by Yasuhiko Shimizu and executive produced by Vincenzo Natali, Cube stars Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, Tashiro Hikaru, Saito Takumi, Yoshida Kotaro and Anne. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan on Oct. 22.
