Green Lantern: Who Is Fatality, John Stewart's Villainous Love?

The Green Lantern Corps has garnered its fair share of enemies over the years. At the same time, the various Green Lanterns themselves haven't had the best luck with romance. These two aspects of the Green Lantern mythos intersected in the form of John Stewart's enemy-turned-romance, Fatality.

Fatality was born Yrra Cynril on the planet Xanshi. Yrra was born into Xanshi's royal family and sent to the Warlords of Okaara at a young age. On Okaara, Yrra was trained as a warrior, picking up her fighting skills fairly quickly. Yrra was on Okaara when her home planet was destroyed in Cosmic Odyssey #2 by Jim Starlin and Mike Mignola. Xanshi was destroyed thanks to an error in judgement on the part of John Stewart, who was supposed to protect the planet.

Unaware of which Green Lantern was actually responsible for her planet's destruction, Yrra blamed the entire Green Lantern Corps. As Fatality, Yrra went on a killing spree of old Green Lanterns. At this point in time, however, the corps was no more. Only Kyle Rayner still wielded a Green Lantern ring. In Green Lantern #83, by Ron Marz and Darryl Banks, Fatality hunted down Kyle and attempted to kill him. This was the first of many confrontations between Yrra and the Green Lantern of Earth. Early into their confrontations, Fatality learned that John was responsible for Xanshi's destruction. Yrra went after John several times, despite John's attempts to make peace with the villain.

When the Green Lantern Corps returned, Fatality reappeared in Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #3, by Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons and Patrick Gleason. Fatality was hired as a bounty hunter to go after the resurgent Green Lanterns, teaming up with others who had grudges against the corps.

During "The Sinestro Corps War," Fatality was given a yellow power ring and inducted into the Sinestro Corps. After the war, in Green Lantern Corps #30 by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, Fatality was taken by Zamorons and transformed into a Star Sapphire. Filled with love, Fatality went to search for John Stewart.

Fatality approached John in Green Lantern #41 by Johns, Philip Tan and Eddy Barrows. Yrra appeared before the Green Lantern, confessing that she felt purposeless when Xanshi was destroyed, so she spent her life hunting Green Lanterns. Fatality implored John to forgive himself for Xanshi's destruction before vanishing.

Now an ally, Fatality would appear to help during the events of "Blackest Night," making peace with the Green Lantern Corps. In Green Lantern: New Guardians #1, by Tony Bedard and Tyler Kirkham, Fatality joined Kyle Rayner's team in investigating why rings from across the emotional spectrum were drawn to the Green Lantern.

After completing this mission, Fatality returned to John Stewart in Green Lantern Corps #14 by Tomasi and Fernando Pasarin. Yrra asked for John's help with a rock fragment that was drawing her to an unknown location. Together, Fatality and John followed the fragment's trail deep into space, realizing that these fragments were pieces of Mogo reassembling. After helping the Green Lanterns face off against the Guardians, the Third Army and the First Lantern, Fatality helped John reconstruct Mogo. Once the living planet was reassembled, Yrra and John began a relationship. Sadly, it seemed that this relationship wasn't meant to last.

In Green Lantern Corps #34, by Van Jensen and Bernard Chang, Fatality was revealed to have been kidnapped by shape-shifting Durlans. When John found Yrra, her Star Sapphire ring had been destroyed and her hatred for the Green Lantern had been reignited. Fatality claimed that she had never loved John and that the ring had forced these feelings upon her.

Still, Yrra's fate is up in the air, considering the ending of Green Lantern #20, by Johns, Gleason, Doug Mahnke, Cully Hammer, Aaron Kuder, Jerry Ordway, Ivan Reis and Ethan Van Sciver. In this particular ending, John Stewart was elected as a state senator and became a leader alongside Yrra. Given the turbulent nature of Fatality's relationship with Green Lanterns, her future is still very much open for new changes.
