The Last of Us television series is adapted from the acclaimed 2013 Naughty Dog game that tells the story of a destroyed world overrun by zombie-like creatures who've fallen ill from a global sickness infecting them. Ellie, a teenager living in the post-apocalyptic universe, might hold the key in her blood to the pandemic's cure. As she struggles to find her way in this shattered world, she meets Joel, a smuggler who's lost his daughter due to the global sickness, and the two decide to protect each other on their way to presumed safety.

Ramsey's character description for the role reads similarly to the game, saying, "Ramsey will play Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan who has never known anything but a ravaged planet who struggles to balance her instinct for anger and defiance with her need for connection and belonging … as well as the newfound reality that she may be the key to saving the world."
