During Super Bowl LV, Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for Old, the latest film from writer-director M. Night Shyamalan.
Based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, Old is slated for release this July. The trailer opens on a family taking a trip, joining a number of other beachgoers. The day takes a bizarre and horrifying turn when everyone begins to age rapidly.
Lévy and Peeters' graphic novel was originally published in French in 2010 as Château de sable in France, later getting an English release as Sandcastle. The book features overt existentialist themes, tackling the inevitability of death by following a group of people on a beach who find themselves trapped in a time warp that sucks the life out of them, with each coming to terms with their fate in their own way. Shyamalan and Universal first announced the adaptation as a mystery project back in October 2019.
The film announced its cast in May 2020 before beginning production in September, at which point the official title was revealed. "This summer, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly… reducing their entire lives into a single day," the official synopsis reads.
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Old stars Gael García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps, Abbey Lee, Embeth Davidtz, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Emun Elliott and Nolan River. The film is scheduled for release on July 23.
