Star Wars: 5 Jedi Who Should Have Been Anakin's Master (& 5 Ways Obi-Wan Was the Best)

The Star Wars franchise has many fan favorite characters but one of the most popular and important is Anakin Skywalker. His fall to the dark side and redemption are the crux of the first two trilogies and Darth Vader, his Sith alter ego, is considered one of the best villains in all of fiction. Anakin had a rough time as a Jedi, partly because of the Clone Wars, his great power level, and the lack of faith that the Jedi Order showed in him.

The Jedi Order was full of masters that may have been a better master for the Chosen One than Obi-Wan Kenobi, ones who may have been able to stop his fall to darkness. However, there are some definite arguments for Obi-Wan being the Master that Anakin could have asked for.

10 Better Master For Anakin: Yoda Could Have Noticed Anakin's Fall And Stopped It

Yoda was the senior most master of the Jedi Order and the leader of the Jedi Council. He had a lot on his plate but he also helped train the younglings in the Temple, so he had extra time. Having a Padawan might have been difficult for him but one would think that someone as powerful as Anakin would warrant a senior Master, not a newly minted Jedi Knight like Obi-Wan.

Yoda wasn't always the greatest Jedi but someone with his kind of experience would have helped Anakin through a lot and perhaps with a more personal relationship, Yoda would have noticed the signs of Anakin's fall and been able to stop it.

9 Obi-Wan Was The Best: He Was His Master's Last Student

The Padawan-Master relationship was the closest thing that many Jedi had to a family. They spent so much time together and formed powerful bonds. Qui-Gon Jinn was an unconventional Jedi and he and Obi-Wan were very close. Qui-Gon took responsibility for Anakin, a responsibility that upon his death fell to Obi-Wan.

Qui-Gon was like a father to Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan taking on Anakin as a student was like something that Qui-Gon passed down to him. Obi-Wan took this obligation very seriously and knew that his master would have wanted him to be Anakin's master.

8 Better Master For Anakin: Ki-Adi-Mundi Would Have Understood Anakin's Love For Padme

Ki-Adi-Mundi was a Cerean Jedi Knight who was admitted to the Jedi Council to let the Masters know about the lives of Knights. On top of that rarity, he was also allowed to have a wife and children, as Cereans weren't known for their high birth rates and if a Cerean could breed, they needed to so that species could remain viable.

This would give him a window into Anakin's mind, especially as it relates to Padme. Ki-Adi-Mundi could teach Anakin how to love without the greed that marked his love for Padme and may have been able to help him deal with his issues with attachments.

7 Obi-Wan Was The Best: The Two Have A Near-Unshakable Brother-Like Bond

Obi-Wan and Anakin were pretty close in age, probably closer than most Padawan and Masters. They looked at each other as brothers and this made their working relationship very beneficial for both of them. There were few secrets between them and the affection they held for each other made them watch each other's backs very well, a boon in wartime.

Obi-Wan lost his Master and Anakin was taken from his mother. Both of them lost what little family they had and found solace in each other. This was very good for Anakin, as a colder master may have completely alienated him.

6 Better Master For Anakin: Plo Koon Could Have Helped Him Resist The Darkness Inside Him

Plo Koon was one of the foremost Jedi generals of the Clone Wars. He was known for caring about the clones under his command more than many other generals and was also an ace pilot. He and Anakin had a good working relationship during the war and if they had worked together before, things may have been very different for Anakin.

Anakin loved piloting and he and Koon would have bonded over this. Anakin was also known for caring deeply about the men under his command as well. Koon's even handed demeanor could have taught Anakin a thing or two about resisting the darkness inside of him, not something Anakin excelled at.

5 Obi-Wan Was The Best: His Mastery Of Defense Made Him The Best Teacher At The Time

Anakin was an impetuous young man but he was also a very gifted lightsaber combatant. He was all about offense, though, using his great power and skill to stay on the attack. Obi-Wan was quite different, though. His saber style, Soresu, was more defensive minded and he used his mastery of it to help teach Anakin to be more defensive.

A Master with a more offensive saber style wouldn't have given Anakin the balanced education that Obi-Wan did. Anakin might not have been known as the great combatant without this approach and possibly would have died in battle at some point, which may have cost the Republic the Clone Wars.

4 Better Master For Anakin: Qui-Gon Jinn Has More Experience With Troubled Youths

This one is pretty impossible but Qui-Gon would have been a much better master for Anakin if he had survived his battle against Darth Maul. Obi-Wan was a great Jedi but he was far from perfect and he was given a Padawan at a very young age. Qui-Gon had experience training Jedi and was more ready to train someone as troubled as Anakin.

In a perfect world, Qui-Gon would have been able to teach Anakin how to deal with the Jedi life in a more unconventional way than Obi-Wan did, connecting him to the Living Force. Qui-Gon also noticed more than Obi-Wan did and may have been able to detect Palpatine's tampering in Anakin's life and stop it sooner.

3 Obi-Wan Was The Best: The Two Are Opposites That Work Well Together

Obi-Wan and Anakin are two very different people. Anakin was prone to rush into things and liked to be in the thick of it because he enjoyed the thrill. Obi-Wan was more reserved in his approach and while he put himself into the thick of things, he did it because he knew that's where he belonged. He didn't enjoy it, it was just what he had to do.

Anakin and Obi-Wan got along well because they fit together- they had different ways of doing things but putting them together made a team that could deal with just about anything. Obi-Wan was patient with Anakin where another Master may not have been and tempered him with his thoughtfulness. Anakin's impetuous attitude spurred Obi-Wan to action at times he may have not done so.

2 Better Master For Anakin: Mace Windu And Anakin's Mutual Stubbornness Could Bond Them Deeply

Mace Windu was second in command of the Order and one of the best lightsaber combatants ever. He and Anakin would have clashed a lot- Mace was a very hard person to get along with and Anakin could be a handful. However, their mutual stubbornness would keep them together, going at each other and gaining a better understanding and relationship.

Mace's lightsaber style, Vapaad, brought its practitioners close to the dark side and Mace could have taught Anakin how to better deal with the darkness inside of him. Mace's lightsaber mastery would have also made Anakin an even formidable fighter.

1 Obi-Wan Was The Best: He Asked For The Role

The problem of who was going to train Anakin was a big one for the Jedi Order. No one stepped up except Obi-Wan and that meant a lot. They all knew how powerful Anakin was and how much care needed to be taken with him yet none of them were willing to train him. Obi-Wan, who was only just about to become a Knight, did and that says it all.

Obi-Wan was the perfect master for Anakin because he wanted to be Anakin's master. He chose it and while he didn't always do the best job, he cared enough to do the job, which isn't something that could be said for the rest of the Jedi Order's Masters.
