Although The Mandalorian Season 2 is over, there is still more content to enjoy, including a Star Wars: Mission Fleet short with a very helpful IG-11.
The animated short, uploaded to the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel, depicts a wordless scenario starring the Mandalorian and the Child. The animation is a collaboration with Hasbro, the company behind the collection of figures which inspired the clip. While the video uses CGI models, they are all replicas of toys available throughout the Star Wars Mission Fleet collection. This even includes the speeder that the bounty hunter uses to traverse the desert terrain.
The brief encounter with the stormtroopers in the video is an entirely original encounter that was not present in the actual series. The ambush forces Djarin to dismount, taking cover behind a rock, seemingly in trouble. However, IG-11 arrives just in time, giving Djarin and Grogu some much-need backup.
Unlike the Disney+ series, where IG-11 operates independently based on its programming, the video short has the Mandalorian summoning him. This is notable since Djarin expressed a distrust for droids throughout the first season of the show.
Due to the lack of dialogue, neither Pedro Pascal nor Taika Waititi lent their voices to their respective characters. Even so, the short characterizes them appropriately through their sharpshooting skills, as well as Djarin's clear protective nature around the Child. The two continue to look out for each other, just like in the show, as the Child taps into the force to aid in the fight. Finally, Djarin uses his iconic jetpack to return to his vehicle, which is another item included within the Hasbro toys.
The Star Wars Kids YouTube channel also includes video series such as Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures and Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge. The animated short is the first video added to its Star Wars: Mission Fleet series on its website. As for Hasbro, this is not its first line of figures for the show, as it also distributes others such as the Vintage Collection.
Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+. Season 3 is expected to begin production in the spring.
