Even the harshest critics of anime will grudgingly admit that the medium is full of extravagant character designs and personalities. Right from little boys who are actually assassins, to cute girls who could easily be killing machines, the one term that perfectly describes such characters is “gap moe.”
Genres where such characters can often be seen include shonen, isekai, fantasy, and adventure, simply because it’s where creators get to truly show off their creativity. Despite a disproportionately high number of male characters, anime has a fair share of superpowered female characters as well.

She led an army of humans against Satan’s army, and partly thanks to her sacred sword Better Half, she was able to defeat not only Lucifer, but backed Satan and his entire army of demons into a corner as well.

For a girl who is as strong, opinionated, and hot-headed as Baileu, fans expected her to possess powers that would make her an exceptionally strong fighter.
While that is true, it does come at a cost – Baileu is unable to channel her abilities for an extended period of time since they take a heavy toll on her body and mind. After her fights, she’s shown to temporarily lose her memories, as well as have her hair change color permanently, little by little.

Despite her frail and delicate appearance, as well as her poor physical condition, Nanami is shown to be an exceptionally strong girl, so much so that her brother Shichika compared her skills to that of Japan’s strongest swordsman: Hakuhei Sabi.
In fact, up until later in the series Shichika is shown to be completely unaware of the fact that Nanami also possesses a plethora of superpowers, including immortality, invisible attacks, power mimicry, quick regeneration, and enhanced senses.
7 Saraka: A Government Negotiator Who’s Actually An Alien That’s Billions Of Years Old (KADO: The Right Answer)
Despite being one of Japan’s best government negotiators, Saraka is actually the kind of woman who gets flustered easily in the presence of the man she has a crush on – Shindou.
However, her true avatar as an Anisotropic being is in sharp contrast to her human personality, where she’s fiercely protective of humans and uses all of her weakened Anisotropic powers to hold back the alien zaShunina, even if it meant her dying in the process.
6 Hajime: A Carefree Young Girl Who Loves Fighting Aliens With Her Twin Blade Weapon (Gatchaman Crowds)
Hajime is introduced as a carefree chatterbox whose excessively bubbly nature is often seen as off-putting, even by her teammates.
As a Gatchaman, however, she’s shown to be an exceptionally strong-willed fighter who was able to resist even Berg Katze’s control of her Gatchaman. Her weapon of choice is her twin blades that she uses to fight and apprehend alien criminals.
5 Shizue: A Kind Woman Whose Body Is Host To The Terrifying Flame Spirit Ifrit (That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime)
Shizue is an adventurer who is shown to be kind, friendly, and trusting. In fact, she is shown to have taught Otherworlder children in her spare time.
However, the presence of the Flame Giant Ifrit within her meant that on rare occasions, he would be able to take over her body. In such cases, he would burn anyone who got in his way, including Shizue’s friends, and Rimuru.
4 Nezuko: A Simple Minded Demon Who’s Actually A Frighteningly Deadly Killer (Demon Slayer)
Nezuko is equal parts cute and equal parts scary. With the appearance of a teenage girl but the mental age of a child, she is a demon that is actually more innocent than most humans her age.
Yet, when it comes to protecting the ones she loves (especially Tanjiro), Nezuko shows a frightening side of hers that often shocks the demons she fights and kills, including the Swamp Demon and the Temple Demon.
3 Irisviel: A Doting Mother & A Loving Wife Who’s Also A Fearsome Magic-User (Fate/Zero)
For a majority of the anime, Irisviel is shown to be a soft-spoken young woman who does as her powerful family pleases, including marrying the man they choose for her.
Despite that, she’s shown to possess a startling amount of courage, which is displayed when she uses magic against Kirei, who she knows is too powerful to be defeated by her magic abilities.
2 Myne: A 5-Year-Old That Possesses Powers Strong Enough To Choke A Man To Death (Ascendance Of A Bookworm)
Myne is a cute little 5-year-old girl, who’s hard working, friendly, smart and extremely devoted to her family. Most of her time is spent trying to figure out how she can best recreate the inventions of modern Japan, in the timeline she currently lives in.
She’s also shown to possess the Devouring, a power whose full force was on display when she nearly choked the High Bishop to death, simply for disrespecting her parents for being poor.
1 Tomoyo: A Teenage Otaku Who Can Also Manipulate Time (When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace)
By all appearances, Tomoyo is an average high school girl. She gets easily embarrassed in front of Andou, is an otaku, is friendly and forgiving, and sometimes shows a surprisingly mature side to herself.
This is in sharp contrast to the extremely powerful and dangerous ability she possesses, called Closed Clock. She’s actually a time manipulator, and she uses her ability only under dire situations, like when her friends’ powers were threatened by a copy-cat.
