10 Anime You Didn't Know Crunchyroll Helped Make | CBR

Crunchyroll has come a long way.  Originally, they were a place where people went to illegally watch anime, but over time they became the biggest place for people to enjoy new series legally.   Nearly every major anime at this point can be viewed by having a subscription to Crunchyroll or Funimation.  But of course, no major company stops there.

After several years of accumulating anime fans' dollars to get simulcasts, Crunchyroll had both the cash and the clout to be involved in making anime themselves.  Some anime they're directly responsible for, and others they're merely one of many companies that helped produce the show.

10 Masamune's Revenge Is A Rom-Com About A Young Boy Wanting Revenge On A Girl Who Bullied Him As A Child

One of Crunchyroll’s earliest projects, Masamune-kun’s Revenge, aired back in 2017, and is animated by Silver Link. The series is about a teenaged boy named Masamune who spent his youth being mocked by his classmate Aki Adagaki for being overweight.

After growing up and becoming attractive, Masamune goes out of his way to try and convince Aki to fall in love with him so he can reject her the way she did him.

9 Dies Irae Is A Visual Novel Adaptation That Didn't Live Up To The Hype

Not every anime Crunchyroll deals with gets high ratings.  Dies Irae has a 5.38 average score on MyAnimeList, and there aren't exactly a ton of people begging for the visual novel adaptation to receive another season.  It's set in Suwahara, where Ren Fujii is recovering from a fight with his best friend.

Though he's trying to get back to normal, he continues to struggle with Shirou's warning of how dangerous their city is.  This series ran for two seasons across seventeen episodes, with the second season being online only.

Citrus originally premiered in 2018 and was animated by studio Passione, also known for their work on Rail Wars and The Wasteful Days of High School Girls. The rare shoujo-ai series, it starts out with Yuzu Aihara being told she's moving to a new school because her mom has gotten married again.

Forced into attending an all-girls' school, Yuzu mostly just stands out thanks to her personality and style.  She has a run-in with the school's student council president that goes poorly enough as it is, but then she discovers that Mei is also her new step-sister.  And has a crush on her.

6 Yuru Camp Is A Slice Of Life About Camping

Yuru Camp was a pretty popular slice of life comedy that started in 2018.  The series focuses on two characters: Rin Shima and Nadeshiko Kagamihara.  Rin loves spending her days camping near Mount Fuji, while Nadeshiko is relatively inexperienced.

Nadeshiko finds her way to Rin's camp while she's all alone out in the forest, and spends the night with Rin while they get to know one another.  This series was popular enough that season two is on its way.

4 Somali And The Forest Spirit Sees A Golem Guarding One Of The Last Humans On The Planet

Somali and the Forest Spirit is one of the best-received Crunchyroll anime series.  Animated by studio Satelight, it takes place in a world where humans have been all but wiped out.  In this world, other mystical creatures have become the dominant race and humans are forced to hide or risk being consumed by these monsters.

One day, a Golem wandering in nature finds a young girl named Somali, who's been lost in a forest, and decides to take her home to her parents, promising to protect her until then.

3 The Reflection Is A Series About Both Super-Heroes And Villains

One of the stranger shows to come out during the Summer 2017 season, The Reflection was animated by Studio DEEN, who has a track record that's questionable at best.  The series is set in a world where one day an event happens that causes people all around the world to gain super powers.

The rest of the anime is about who caused The Reflection, and the heroes and villains who fight in the aftermath of it.  Plagued with mediocre animation, this series was in trouble the moment it released.

2 Urahara Is About Three Girls Fighting To Save Harajuku From Aliens

Another 2017 series, Urahara was animated by EMT Squared, which people might recognize for the isekai series that launched in 2020, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear.  The series is about three girls working in the Harajuku district.

While they're working, aliens arrive and make an attempt to steal Harajuku's culture, and the girls are forced to fight together to push the aliens back.  Based on a web manga, Urahara ran twelve episodes and wasn't particularly well-received.

1 Rising of the Shield Hero Is The Best Received Of All The Crunchyroll Produced Anime

This series was produced by a ton of different companies, which is probably why it’s so beautifully animated. Kinema Citrus did an incredible job with this show. Shield Hero was one of the bigger series of 2019—it starred Naofumi, a young man pulled into another world and asked to save it along with three other people from different worlds.

While the other heroes are given more than adequate support, Naofumi is forced to make his own way, and prove that the Shield Hero can be just as useful as the others.
