Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is Adding Custom Design Slots - and It's About Time

Customization is one of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' best features. Players can transform their island paradise into anything they want, and on thing that really helps with this is the Custom Designs app. Players have used this app to make some pretty fantastic creations that make each island unique. It has gotten so popular that the New Horizons community has created various websites to share custom designs and help give players access to some of the best designs the game has to offer.

However, despite how good the game's Custom Designs app is, players still feel that there is room for improvement. Specifically, players have complained that the number of designs a player can create and share are far too limited. Custom Designs currently allows players to fill 50 design slots at a time, and these can fill up pretty quickly for those looking to create more elaborate pieces of art. Now, a year after New Horizons' release, Nintendo is finally answering players' calls.

In the latest free New Horizons update coming on March 18, players will be able to purchase the Custom Design Pro Editor Plus upgrade for their Nook Phone at the Nook Stop in Resident Services for 2,000 Nook Miles. This will grant the player 50 additional design slots for Normal and Pro Custom Design modes, meaning a total of 100 new slots. The upgrade will also allow players to make custom designs for umbrellas, small flags and photo stands.

In addition to that, a new Custom Design Portal app will also be made available for 300 Nook Miles, giving players access to the Able Sisters' Custom Design Portal directly from their Nook Phone. Previously, this was only accessible though the Able Sisters' shop, so players couldn't access it if the store was closed for the evening. Expanding the quantity of design slots and providing easy access to the design portal are both great quality-of-life changes that the game needs. They should help foster even more creative designs and keep the creative community connected in better ways.

Other new content coming to New Horizons soon include a one year anniversary cake, new seasonal items and custom designs to celebrate April Fool's Day and prom season. The update also includes support for the Sanrio amiibo cards, which are rereleasing on March 26. These allow players who scan the cards to obtain items and villagers based on Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty. A year after launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is still going strong, so fans should remain excited for what's to come.
