Ironheart Star Landed the Marvel Role Without an Audition | CBR

Actress Dominique Thorne, known for her work in Oscar-nominated features like If Beale Street Could Talk and Judas and the Black Messiah, is set to play the title character in the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart — a role she didn't have to audition for.

In an interview with Empire, Thorne discussed how the House of Ideas offered her the part of teenage genius Riri Williams, saying, "I was so shocked, in fact, that there was a considerable lag in the conversation! I was waiting for them to say, like, 'Oh, we'll send you the sides,' or, 'Get your tape over to us.' But there was none of that. It was just like, 'Would you like to do this?' It was probably the most unique experience I've ever had because there was no audition at all."

First appearing in 2016, Ironheart is the superhero identity of Riri Williams, a 15-year-old inventor from Chicago. After suffering the loss of her step-father and her best friend, Riri uses her considerable brilliance to build her own suit of powered armor to fight crime. When Tony Stark is put into a coma at the climax of Civil War II, an AI of him was sent to Riri to guide and encourage her hero's journey. Since then, Ironheart has been a key member of Marvel's stable of young heroes, headlining her own series and becoming a member of the Champions.
