Black Clover: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Grey | CBR

Grey is a surprising character in the Black Clover universe, to the point where it can be hard to talk about her without revealing too much, especially since she appears for quite some time in a disguise. The fact that she was really a girl was even set up as a plot twist of its own.

Some parts of her character are rather familiar while some aspects about her are a little more surprising. In more ways than one, she also shows that it's important to never judge by anyone by their appearance.

10 The Anime Teased Her True Form

When the audience first sees her, Grey takes the form of a large and heavyset man with black hair who usually towers over the other characters. One of her more distinguishable features in this form is her spherical earrings. Much of her appearance in this form is shaded and kept from view. Generally, she doesn't say much while in this form, except for some wheezing.

Eventually, her true form is revealed to be that of a young woman with light-blue hair, complete with strands that form the shape of a heart. The anime actually gives a hint of her true appearance--in the 11th episode, she can be seen running past Asta while in Kikka. Naturally, she is seen blushing and hiding herself, hinting that she is ashamed of her true appearance.

9 Her Backstory Should Sound Familiar

Like many Black Clover characters, Grey is an homage to a classic fairy tale character, and Grey is none other than Cinderella herself. This becomes obvious when her backstory is revealed, and it is learned that she was treated as a servant for her stepmother and stepsisters.

Despite their treatment, Grey never gave up hope that she could mend her relationship with her family. Eventually, Grey used magic to make her resemble her stepsisters more. Unfortunately, they were both horrified at this and chased her out of the house.

8 Her Name Isn't Actually Grey

Just like Cinderella, Grey's stepsisters gave her this demeaning nickname when they saw her covered in soot. The name is also likely a reference to how in some languages, such as Chinese, Cinderella is called "Grey Girl."

Despite it not actually being her name, it's her alias throughout the series and what characters refer to her as. Ironically, she also has grey eyes, which characters could assume is the reason for her name, as well.

7 Her Transformation Powers Are More Unique Than Others

In the Black Clover universe, transformation magic is more or less the ability to transform the user into someone else. This magic is very capable in itself, being able to change a person's age, body type, and biological sex. There are even different ways a spell can reverse itself when it is undone.

While Grey has shown that she is capable of changing her appearance like other transformation magic users, she is also shown to be able to expand on this ability by transforming objects other than herself, including spells. This is somewhat unusual, as other transformation magic users seem limited to using their magic on their own appearance, hinting at something special about Grey's magic.

6 She Has A Type But Is Probably Willing To Settle

According to supplementary material, Grey wants someone gentle and kind when looking for qualities in a partner. She's also a bit of a follower, as she wants someone who could lead her.

Initially, this seems ironic, as she is in love with Gauche, who can be rude and brash, and somewhat brutal. That said, Grey has seen a better side to Gauche since he saved her from robbers and motivates her to have the courage to move forward after being expelled from her home. Perhaps she simply sees the good in him.

5 She's Older Than She Looks

When her transformation was first undone, and the characters saw her transformation for the first time, it was quickly revealed that, despite her youthful and almost childlike appearance, she's actually 24.

This is especially surprising to Charmy, as it means that Grey is both older than her and Gauche, who she is surprised to learn is around her age.

4 She Has Healing Powers

After Gauche is impaled by Dante's sword, Grey is able to heal him by manipulating the blade. Her power was shown to be capable of reassembling his own tissue.

This revelation is also another hint that Grey's powers might actually be more than just transformation magic as even Own commented that Grey's actions appeared to be more than a mere recovery.

3 She Can Control Any Element

As mentioned, Grey's magical abilities have been shown to be powerful enough to heal people and create transformations. In addition to this, Grey has also been shown to be capable of transforming any elemental attack into anything element she wants, essentially giving her power over every magical element.

Although her powers were initially assumed to be an extension of transformation magic, exactly what type of magic she seems to control is generally unknown. That said, her unique abilities classify her as an Arcane Stage mage.

2 She's On A Winning Streak

Grey proves that it's wrong to judge by appearances and not just because she sometimes disguises herself as other people. While she is shy and quiet, and is generally a kind-hearted person, that doesn't mean she should be underestimated.

Grey has been involved in a few fights in the series, and while she never fought alone, technically speaking, she was never on the losing team. Twice she fought alongside Gauche against Zarick and Zuta and won, and she was also involved in a victory against Drowa and Eclat. The one exception to her winning streak was when her fight against Rades Spirito and Sally had been interrupted.

1 She's Adored By An Idol Group & Fans Of The Series

Snow Man, the idol group that performed some of the theme songs for the Black Clover anime, like "Stories" and "Grandeur," have said that Grey is one of their favorite characters in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Grey has also been shown to be popular in ranking polls. In the first Viz poll, she ranked #5, after Yami Sukehiro, Asta, Noelle Silva, and Yuno, respectively.
