Being an icon of the 90's, Sailor Moon featured a variety of outfits and fashions. While some are iconic looks that were popular at the time, like Rei's pink overalls, Ami's headbands, or even Usagi's occasional skort, others are clearly timeless looks. And even the more dated fashions deserve their moment in the spotlight.
Many of the series' characters have worn memorable and charming clothes that fans remember to this day. Some originated with manga while others were created for individual incarnations. In fact, the same outfit can appear multiple times, between the manga or the anime, and make a different impression each time viewers see it.
10 Mamoru Cuts A Fine Figure In A Tuxedo
The 90's anime seemed to try to paint Mamoru as a bad boy, what with his purple pants and jogging outfits, but this was less the case in the original manga (where he was usually seen in his school uniform and reading glasses.)
When he's first introduced, for example, he can be seen wearing a tuxedo and sunglasses and makes for quite an impressive figure. While it seems a little on the nose for him to go out in public in a tuxedo and something covering his eyes, the outfit is actually implied to be part of his Tuxedo Mask costume. Of course, his tuxedo is actually either a dinner jacket or white tie evening dress, not a real tuxedo, but it's hard to change a name.
9 Even Setsuna Has Her Little Black Dress
Being the Guardian of Space and Time, Sailor Pluto might not have much of a social life, but fashion is surprisingly important to her. According to supplementary material, she wants to be a fashion designer and is a decent seamstress (not that this ever pops up in the series.)
And in illustrations, Setsuna has often appeared in fashionable dresses worn by real-life models. For example, she can be seen in an elegant black dress based on one work by Naomi Campbell. Black is naturally Setsuna's color, it being the color of her princess dress and her sailor fuku.
8 Michiru Pulls Off Different Shades Of Green
Green is a color heavily associated with the ocean and it naturally suits the Sailor Scout of the Sea, Sailor Neptune herself. While she tended to favor blue in the 90's anime, Sailor Moon Crystal places her in a charming seafoam-colored ensemble.
The dress is even complemented by a green sash. Depending on the scene, she sometimes wears a headband with it.
7 Haruka's Leather Jacket Lets You Know She's The Boss
In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, Haruka's most famous outfit among fans appears to be the white dress she pairs with a black vest and neckerchief. But another outfit she wears seems to flatter her and reflect her personality a little better: a black leather jacket with a matching miniskirt, paired with a white top and black boots.
It's a bit more mature, reflecting her as the leader of the Outer Senshi, and the fondness for black leather ties into her love of racing and going as fast as the wind. She isn't the Sailor Scout of the Wind for nothing.
6 Hotaru Looks Ready For Her Photoshoot
Hotaru is known for wearing black clothing, but it doesn't really fit her personality beyond giving her an elegant appearance. Despite this, dark colors flatter her with her pale skin and dark hair. One of her nicer outfits is her jacket, which has a large white collar.
She famously wears this outfit in the anime while having her photo taken. Depending on the lighting, the jacket's color changes from black, blue, and green, and her top underneath is purple, her signature color. She sometimes pairs the look with a red hat, but honestly doesn't need it.
5 Minako Is Charming In Her Rainbow Outfit
Minako's theme color is technically orange, but she seldom wears it. Even her princess dress is yellow. She also didn't wear it much as Sailor V, either. And her most iconic piece of clothing is her red bow.
One of her more charming outfits is a multicolored ensemble she wears in the early episodes, involving a green skirt, purple top, burgundy jacket, and even a touch of orange at the neck, complete with her classic red bow. As the Sailor Scout of Light, it makes sense for her to pull off the entire rainbow.
4 Ami's Blue Vest & Choker Combo Makes For The Perfect Outfit To Study In
Blue is Ami's iconic color, and it appears most prominently in her vest, as well as her blouse, which is a paler shade of blue, that could be easily mistaken for white. She pairs this with a charming collar choker and an orange skirt. In some scenes, the skirt takes on a more flattering red.
The outfit is perfect for nice days when she can't decide whether to study at the library or study at home, meaning this summery look is best kept for days when school and cram school are not in session.
3 Rei Is On Fire In Her Little Red Dress
Appearances are clearly important to Rei Hino. She even wears heels as Sailor Mars. At times, she likes to dress in more mature outfits, with long jackets and long skirts, but can be girlish, too, donning crop-tops or those infamous pink overalls.
As the Sailor Scout of Fire, and Mars, her signature is red, with many of her outfits incorporating it. A little red dress she wears in later episodes has her in all of her crimson glory.
2 Makoto's Mini-Dress & Green Top Really Flatter Her Figure
Makoto notably dons this outfit during the infamous scene where the girls debate over who should play the lead in a production of Snow White. Mako suggests she should play the princess due to her ample figure, which the English dub famously changed to her having the most "talent."
The outfit consists of a pale mini-dress and a bright green top. Arguably, this in an outfit that just gets betters with age. In less preserved versions of the episode, the bright green is rendered a much more flattering mint color. Added to that, the dress has pockets in some scenes, making it practical as well as chic.
1 Usagi's Princess Disguise Is Even Prettier Than Her Actual Princess Dress
When it comes to looking her best, Usagi has an advantage over the other girls, thanks to that magic pen she has that lets her transform into anything. When sneaking into Princess D's ball, Usagi uses the pen to disguise herself as a princess and the dress has appeared in multiple continuities.
In the 90's anime, the dress is a light purple and decorated with red roses. It's also one of the few times Usagi is seen wearing lipstick in the 90's anime as well, ultimately giving her an elegant, ladylike appearance. Sailor Moon Crystal recolors the dress hot pink, which fits Usagi's personality, but makes it look a bit childish, and make the flowers white and less prominent. The original manga and Crystal also give Usagi a tiara, which makes sense given her disguise and also hints at the fact Usagi really is a princess. That said, all three are still superior to the live-action version, which replaced it with a bear costume.
