One of the Marvel universe's major antagonists, the Titanian Eternal is known as Thanos, is the bane of the superhero collective, often forcing them to go to extreme steps to protect themselves (as well as that of existence on a cosmic scale.) This villain has an unexplainable fixation for destruction and annihilation, two martial philosophies around which he bases his life.
His intelligence is nothing short of incandescent, regularly outpacing his opponents by several moves — or even playing his game entirely off the metaphorical board. Interestingly, Thanos' does possess the capacity for empathy; the only problem is that it's almost always directed at himself. Regardless of his popularity, however, there are a few facts about the Mad Titan that light needs to be shed on.
10 How Tall Is Thanos? — 2 meters, or 6'7"
Thanos is enormous in the muscular sense, but he stands at around 6'7" in height. This fact might run counter-intuitive to the character's intimidating personality, but the fact remains that he's barely at the upper range of human height.
Still, as an Eternal, Thanos is mighty and has taken down opponents vastly larger than he is, so it doesn't make much difference in terms of outcome in the cosmic sense.
9 Who Are His Parents? — A'Lars and Sui-San
Thanos' father, A'Lars, originates from the ancient Earth city of Titanos and spends his early life performing complex scientific research. After losing a "popular vote" to his brother, Zuras, he leaves the planet and travels to Saturn's largest moon, Titan, where he meets Sui-San, who soon becomes his partner.
Unfortunately, Thanos' birth terrifies his mother into a catatonic state, leaving his father distraught. They reject their son for merely existing, and he murders them for their rejection.
8 Where Does He Come From? — An Eternal Colony On Titan
A'Lars and Sui-San work together to proliferate a new breed of Eternals on Titan, employing a mixture of DNA technology and clonal engineering to make their visions come true.
Further, they are also responsible for developing the Integral Synaptic Anti-Anionic Computer, or I.S.A.A.C., a brilliant AI that continuously manipulates Titan's biosphere to help its inhabitants thrive. Of course, Titan soon experienced the rage of its most violent child (via nuclear bombs, no less.)
7 How Many Siblings Does He Have? — One, His Brother, Eros
A'Lars and Sui-San had two sons, the younger one being Eron (later renamed Eros), who is starkly different from Thanos in every possible way. After his brother shows his true colors, Eros battles him on numerous occasions until he decides to roman the universe and pursues his "romantic" endeavors.
Similar to Thanos, he is blessed with a horde of mind-boggling powers. Still, the one unique to him is the ability to trigger feelings of amorousness in anyone around him, within a fixed radius, of course.
6 Does He Have Any Children? — Yes, But Not All Of Them Are Confirmed
Thane is probably Thanos' most famous son, born of an Inhuman mother. To locate him, his father scours the galaxy with his minions, threatening countless worlds with destruction if they fail to comply. Gamora is "adopted" by Thanos after saving her from the horrifying Grand Inquisitors of the Church's Agents.
He has similarly spawned an endless stream of descendants, many of whom are promptly killed to offer his one true love, Death. Strangely, he actually does have a "child" with this entity, a conscious emptiness known as the Rot.
5 Why Does Thanos Look The Way He Does? — He Suffers From The Deviant Syndrome
Thanos does not look anything like his parents, nor like the Eternal species in general (Homo immortalis). He has disproportionate anatomy, a purple skin tone, and his most prominent feature is his corrugated, extended chin.
This appearance is a direct consequence of the Deviant Gene, giving rise to the so-called Deviant Syndrome. In fact, this is the reason that Sui-San attempts to murder her newborn, for which A'Lars institutionalize her.
4 How Many Different Abilities Does He Have? — He Can Control Mind, Matter, & Energy
Aside from his limitless physical strength and durability, Thanos possesses the capacity to manipulate various kinds of energy, from heat and electricity to force-field generation.
Further, it is tough to break into his brain, but he can simultaneously invade others and adapt them to his own purposes. Finally, Thanos can control atoms and molecules, making his arsenal of techniques considerably more potent.
3 Is His Infinity Gauntlet Arc Different In The Comics? — Yes, It Includes Many New Characters And A Massive Plot Twist
Thanos acquires the six infinity stones and decimates 50% of the universe, but this is not the comic storyline's crux. In the original version by Jim Starlin, he performs this heinous act to obtain recognition from Death, who continues to ignore him anyway.
This infuriates him, and a massive battle is fought between Thanos and several cosmic entities, including Eternity, Infinity, and the Living Tribunal. However, the plot twist is that Nebula successfully "steals" the Infinity Gauntlet and tries to remake existence in her own image. Thanos consequently teams up with his enemies to restore balance.
2 What's With His Fascination For Lady Death? — He Is In Love With Her (But Not Really)
Lady Death has been appearing to Thanos ever since he was a child, slowly nudging him towards a path of nihilism and genocide. He claims to worship her, and his statements have strongly worded romantic overtones, suggesting that he exhibits some feelings for her. Still, the exact nature of these emotions is yet to be deciphered.
Nevertheless, he goes too far, forcing Death to punish him by making him immortal (and, therefore, unable to ever be "with her.") This doesn't stop him from trying, though.
1 How Many Major Deaths Is He Responsible For? — Too Many To Count
Through the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos is responsible for an incomprehensible number of lives being snuffed out (and this is excluding his looting and pillaging, a general trend with him.) In terms of named characters, he has murdered Nova and Star-Lord in the Cancerverse, as well as being killed himself, although the nature of that specific dimension refuses to allow anyone to die.
Likewise, Thanos has battled the Silver Surfer and literally pummeled him into a pulp. Drax the Destroyer, as Arthur Douglas, loses his life along with his family to protect the Mad Titan from being discovered on Earth. In the MCU continuity, Thanos' hands have been directly bloodied by Loki and Vision's deaths.
