Legacies: Hope Uses Landon's Remains… To Make Art?! | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Legacies Season 3, Episode 7, "Yup, It's a Leprechaun, All Right," which aired Thursday on The CW.

After trying everything she could think of to bring back Landon, Hope finally came to the conclusion that he was dead and gone for good in the fifth episode of the third season, "This Is What It Takes." However, last week it was clear Hope was having a hard time letting go. So in this week's outing, "Yup, It's a Leprechaun, All Right," new student Cleo, a witch Hope convinced to enroll in the Salvatore School, persuades Hope to do something drastic to get closure: use Landon's remains to create art.

Ever since Cleo and Hope met, all Hope has been able to focus on is Landon. However, even though they just met, Cleo is understanding of Hope's overwhelming grief. She has suffered through the death of her sisters and, having experienced her own great loss, she knows what Hope is going through. Also, like Hope, Cleo is an artist, and she feels art can be a valuable form of catharsis. However, when Hope confesses she's been blocked artistically since Landon died, Cleo surprisingly suggests she use Landon's remains in her art.

At first, Hope balks at the idea but Cleo convinces her by explaining that it would be a way to give Landon life again. Instead of a painting, Hope's medium of choice, though, Hope decides to make her first sculpture for this project. Hope and Cleo mix clay with the black sludge Landon left behind when he dissolved, and Hope creates a bust that is a perfect likeness of Landon's head. She then signs it with the word "luctus," which she explains means it's time to let Landon go.

As much as she might want that to conclude her mourning over Landon, later in the episode it becomes clear Hope still hasn't given up on him. A woman arrives at her room and offers to buy the bust for an exorbitant amount of money. Given Cleo and Hope agreed to auction off their art to help the school pay off its debts, this sounds like the perfect offer. However, Hope is unwilling to sell.

Later, she recognizes this is just another sign of how much trouble she is having moving on after Landon's death. While Hope may have decided to stop trying to bring him back and is taking steps to get over him, she's obviously unhappy with her decision in a way that seems to go beyond the typical grief associated with the loss of a loved one. Hope has lost a lot of people in her young life and it makes sense she would have trouble coming to terms with yet another death, but in this case, it seems like she is still fixated on the idea of Landon returning, even if she's no longer actively trying to make it happen. So, when the ascendant to the prison world that Malivore and his demons have been relegated to appears in her room, it becomes clear this will only fuel Hope's obsession with getting her boyfriend back.

Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
