Pennyworth: Martha Finally Announces She Is Pregnant | CBR

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8 of Pennyworth, "The Hangman's Noose," which aired Sunday on EPIX.

Ever since the first season of Pennyworth, Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane have been in a push-and-pull relationship. The two get close and then something happens that drives them apart. As Season 2 began, the pair were at odds and in different countries. However, when Thomas returned to London, the characters overcame their issues and once again grew close. The big (but expected) surprise came in "The Rose and Thorn," when Martha learned she was pregnant with a baby who, presumably, will become Bruce Wayne.

However, Martha kept the news to herself -- until now. In this week's episode of Pennyworth, Martha finally announces her pregnancy to Thomas -- but the conversation doesn't go exactly as planned.

In "The Hangman's Noose," the couple head to Martha's apartment to spend the night together. However, before anything else happens, Martha tells Thomas what she has known for two episodes now: she is pregnant with their child. After the initial disbelief passes, Thomas snaps at Martha, not because he is angry that she is pregnant but because she has willingly put herself in harm's way. After all, she chose to stay in London and to take part in the war between the English League and the Raven Union.

However, this disagreement quickly passes after Martha reassures Thomas. Then, the couple shares in the joy of the news as they contemplate becoming parents. For a moment, it looks like everything will be perfect between them.

That is, until Thomas starts talking about marriage.

Thomas says he doesn't want their child to be a bastard, a concern based on the era the series is set in. He insists he and Martha get married as soon as possible -- but Martha is none too pleased with his demand. She's taken aback at first but quickly becomes offended and livid. She doesn't want to get married, and as Thomas keeps on pushing for her to agree, she ultimately storms off, leaving the couple once again at odds with one another.

Of course, comic-book readers know Thomas and Martha will indeed get married. However, Pennyworth is showing the complicated relationship between the two before they fulfill their comic-book destiny. As the war in London grows increasingly dangerous, Thomas and Martha are far from being an official couple. But soon, they may have no choice but to leave Britain and travel to Gotham to have their baby -- as a married couple.

Developed by former Gotham collaborators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, Jason Flemyng as Lord Harwood, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Ryan Fletcher as Dave Boy, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Bazza, Jessica Ellerby as the Queen and Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox. New episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on EPIX.
