Ryan Reynolds is cautiously optimistic that Free Guy will keep its recently announced theatrical release date.
"Hey, guys! Awesome news — we have a new release date for Free Guy!" Reynolds said, noting that the date was "a hundred percent locked in." The video then transitioned to Reynolds announcing the new release date of Aug. 13 — albeit with another voice dubbed over his. "And this one we feel very good about, unless of course..." Reynolds said before being cut off mid-sentence.
Free Guy has been one of many blockbusters that have seen their release dates pushed back due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Originally slated to debut on July 3, 2020, it was moved to Dec. 11, 2020 and then delayed infinitely — until today. Free Guy's new release date was announced as part of a shifting theatrical schedule by Disney, which announced that Black Widow and Cruella would debut simultaneously in theaters and Disney+ Premier Access.
After Free Guy, Reynolds will reunite with director Shawn Levy for the time travel film My Name Is Adam, which is being produced by Reynolds' Maximum Effort and Skydance Pictures. Reynolds will also reprise his role as Wade Wilson in Deadpool 3, which will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 13.
