Spider-Man: How Grim Hunter Carried Kraven the Hunter's Family Legacy On

Vladimir Kravinoff, the villain also known as Grim Hunter, is a character who is destined to forever stand as a reflection of his father, Kraven the Hunter. Kraven (Sergei Kravinoff) was a bloodthirsty and unrelenting man who had dedicated his life to becoming the greatest hunter in the world. His greatest challenge was hunting Spider-Man, an endeavor that ultimately led to his demise. Unfortunately, Grim Hunter followed in his father's footsteps, and it brought him to a similar inglorious fate.

Created by Howard Mackie and Tom Lyle, Grim Hunter made his first appearance in 1994's Spider-Man #47. Vladimir was raised in Russia in a life of luxury, supported by his family's wealth and privilege, yet trained for ruthlessness. His father himself tested him during a rite of passage, and when he succeeded, Kraven took on completing Vladimir's training personally. It was after his father died that Vladimir called himself "Grim Hunter" and decided to complete his father's work and hunt down Spider-Man, as seen in Spider-Man #50, "Son of the Hunter," by Howard Mackie, Tom Lyle, Scott Hanna, Kevin Tinsley and Richard Starkings.

After his one and only battle with the web-slinger, Grim Hunter got out of prison (it's heavily implied that he used his family's wealth to get him out of trouble) and continued the hunt. What he didn't realize until too late was that he wasn't tracking Spider-Man at all. Instead, the trail led him to Peter's clone, Ben Reilly. When he caught up to Ben, the clone was in a battle against Kaine, a twisted clone of Peter. Seeing Kaine as a threat against his destiny to kill Spider-Man, Grim Hunter attacked. But in Spider-Man #55, "End Hunt," by Mackie, Tinsley, Starkings, Mike Manley and Joe Rubinstein, he was quickly overpowered by the unstable clone, and the fight cost him his life.

Although his time as a Spider-Man villain was relatively short-lived when compared to a character like Doctor Octopus, Mysterio or Venom, it made a significant impact on the mythos and fulfilled at least a couple of purposes. First, his death at the hands of Kaine Parker illustrated to audiences in no uncertain terms that this newcomer to the story was a dangerous adversary. Second, it perfectly carried on the legacy of Kraven the Hunter in every way.

Grim Hunter embodied the same ferocious hatred and killer instinct present in his father. It's also clear that while Grim Hunter had a physical edge and was faster and stronger than his father, he still used the same tactics in their battles, showing the audience that just because Spider-Man defeats one villain, it doesn't necessarily save the world from their influence.

What's more important to the story is that Grim Hunter carried on Kraven's theme. Kraven, followed by Grim Hunter, showed Spider-Man a twisted reflection of himself -- of what he could be if it weren't for his heroic heart. Fast reflexes and intense strength are traits both members of the Kravinoff family share with Spider-Man. Even a keen hunter's instinct connects all three characters.

Grim Hunter made another appearance in the "Gauntlet" and "Grim Hunt" storylines, in which other members of the Kravinoff family test a resurrection ritual on him and he returns to life as a twisted lion-like creature. The ritual is performed again, this time successfully returning Kraven himself from the dead. In 2010's Amazing Spider-Man #637, by Joe Kelly, Mark Checcetto, Michael Lark, J.M. DeMatteis and Max Fiumara, the Kravinoff family escapes to the Savage Land, and Kraven kills Grim Hunter out of mercy with an apology on his lips, believing that Vladimir did not deserve what became of him.

This killing underscores that Kraven's family legacy is ultimately a legacy of failure. Kraven's bloodlust and single-minded mission to become the best hunter in the world drove him onto a zealous path that reached its natural conclusion when he died. The same can be said for Grim Hunter, who was so desperate to succeed where his father failed.

Even so, his accomplishments are not overshadowed by Kraven’s own nor do they surpass him. Instead, the sins of the father were reborn in the son. Grim Hunter inherited Kraven’s brutal lifestyle and carried on his legacy as a man so ferociously dedicated to a selfish cause that it brought about his own destruction.
