The Arrowverse's Lex Luthor, Jon Cryer, Names His Favorite Live-Action Lexes

Before Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor returns in Supergirl's Season 6 premiere, the star revealed which prior television/movie portrayals of Lex inspired and fueled him.

"As far as I'm concerned, there are dueling #LexLuthor GOATS. And these are them," Cryer wrote on TwitterCryer's tweet included photos of Rosenbaum's Lex from Smallville and Gene Hackman from 1978's Superman: The Movie. Rosenbaum replied to Cryer's post with gratitude, tweeting back, "Holy shit. too kind of you my man. what a freaking stud. thanks."

Cryer first debuted as the Arrowverse's Lex Luthor in Supergirl's Season 4 episode "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," with the remaining season revealing his extensive role in manipulating characters like Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer) and Supergirl's Harun-El clone Red Daughter for personal gain. Despite being shot by his sister Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) in Supergirl's Season 4 finale, Lex was eventually revived by the Monitor to help save the Multiverse from his Anti-Monitor counterpart.

However, Luthor used his rebirth of sorts to make attempts on the lives of various multiverse incarnations of Superman, including Rosenbaum's Smallville counterpart played by Tom Welling, and rewriting the Book of Destiny to turn himself into a Paragon. When the multiverse was re-written, it also changed the world's memories of Lex from a criminal mastermind to a generous philanthropist and head of the D.E.O.
