Warning! The following contains spoilers for the DLC mission "Murder on Eridanos," available now.
Many of the weapons players can find when exploring in The Outer Worlds can be unique, powerful and overall fun to use. But above all others, the Science Weapons are the craziest weapons you could ever come across.
Each science weapon was designed by a mad scientist or corporation competing to create the Halcyon Colony's ultimate weapon. Their damage and effectiveness are increased as your science skill gets higher. They’re also one of a kind, meaning they can be difficult to find, but finding all of them from the base game, as well as the DLCs "Peril on Gorgon" and "Murder on Eridanos," can lead to achievements and trophies.
Created by your rescuer and ally, Dr. Phineas Welles, the Shrink Ray is the easiest weapon on this list to find. After repairing the Unreliable and leaving Emerald Vale, make your way to Dr. Welles’ secret orbital lab, and you’ll find it sitting on a table nearby for you to take.
As you’d expect from the name, the Shrink Ray can shrink enemies down in size by continually firing at them. This will lower their health and armor rating, as well as make their voices very squeaky.
One of the more hidden Science Weapons in the base game, the Mind Control Ray can be found in a secret underground lab beneath the Ruins of Cascadia on Monarch. Accessing this area will require you to follow Sublight’s faction quest “Space-Crime Continuum.” Once making your way through to the end of the lab, you’ll find an elevator lift that you need to jump across, leading to a ladder, another jump and another ladder. You’ll find a dead scientist, as well as a container with the Mind Control Ray.
This weapon makes enemies your temporary allies as long as you continue firing at them. Since you can use this against virtually any enemy, you should focus on using it against the strongest ones.
The Prismatic Hammer was a prototype developed by weapons company Hammersmith, who was tired of not having a hammer weapon in their arsenal. It's located in a hidden section of the Groundbreaker Station by making your way to a bunk bed area, then jumping on top and crawling through a vent shaft that leads to a hangar occupied by hostile outlaws. You’ll find the Hammer in a container in the room to their right.
The Prismatic Hammer changes its damage type with each swing, going from plasma to electric, corrosive, etc. It also has a charging attack that uses every damage type all at once.
Developed as a prototype by the UDL corporation, the Gloop Gun was designed as a crowd control weapon for protest dispersal. It's on the planet Monarch near the center of the map in a small research facility occupied by marauders. The gun is found in a locked display that is opened by hacking or using a found keycard on a nearby computer terminal; then, you’ll need to either bypass or answer some security questions to unlock the containment unit.
The Gloop Gun acts as a grenade launcher with area of effect damage but can also send enemies flying through the air as if it’s antigravity.
This Science Weapon is found on the abandoned asteroid of Scylla. From the landing pad, make your way to the abandoned mining camp and search the accessible buildings. One of the last should have a container holding the weapon.
The Mandibular Rearranger is a one-handed melee weapon that can rearrange the facial bones of any human it hits, either enlarging or shrinking their head with every swing. If you hit a target enough times, eventually, they will be frozen in place, allowing you to attack while they are vulnerable.
To get the P.E.T., you’ll need to contact the Secret Society of Super Science Sidekicks on the Gorgon Asteroid. They will give you a quest called “A Dialogue Between Dead Mean,” where you’ll need to acquire four issues of The Exhilarating Adventures of Archibald Excelsior. Once this is done, complete a quiz with the following answers: 1. Sissak Sassafras, 2. The Skull, 3. Tricking Archibald, and 4. With a bolt of lightning. Once this is done, the door to the weapon is unlocked.
A two-handed melee weapon, the P.E.T. (or Pest Extermination Tool), was originally a weapon wielded by pulp legend Archibald Excelsior. However, this version is just a replica made by a fan. When preparing to Power or Sweep Attack with this weapon, enemies are pulled towards the wielder. The distance pulled depends on the Science skill.
This Science Weapon can be found on the eastern end of the Gorgon map at the Marauder Outpost. It can be found by turning left when coming up to the OCI Lower Exterior. You’ll then need to defeat the infamous marauder boss, Charles From Accounting, and loot the weapon from his body.
While originally designed as an experimental mail delivery tool, the Special Delivery is now able to launch explosives that home in on enemies like they’re heat-seeking.
While playing through the main story of Gorgon, you’ll eventually need to make your way to an orbital station in the Olympus gas giant for “The Man in High Orbit” quest. Here you’ll need to speak with Dr. Jasper Low, who will give you the weapon to assist you as part of his task, or you can pickpocket it off of him if your skill is high enough.
The Employee Benefits is an experimental weapon by the pharmaceutical corporation Auntie Cleo, but this one heals whoever it targets and can even revive downed companions. The amount healed increases with the wielder's Science skill.
The Udder Buddy can be found in the Wildlife Exploitation Reserve on Eridanos, where you’ll need to complete the “Lost Little Milkmech” side quest. Kill off the hostile canid creatures attacking an automechanical named Betty and you’ll receive the melee weapon with some Bits as a reward.
The Udder Buddy is a highly magnetic wrench specialized in repairing assembly lines on the Happy Dale Farm. Players can use it to pull enemies towards each other to easily take them out using weapons with area of effect damage, like grenades and plasma launchers.
Once making your way to Eridanos, you’ll have to progress through the story until you’ve completed the “Escape!” quest. Then you’ll need to speak with Halcyon Helen and take it from her. You can either persuade her, pickpocket it off of her, or kill her and take it.
The Needler is Halcyon Helen's trusty sidearm in her many shows and movies. It fires infinitely by refilling tiny flechettes coated in one of three potent chemicals, which are cycled by reloading. Rid O' Life is a deadly, green liquid that slowly damages the target. Caustolerene is a corrosive, yellow goo that slowly eats away at a target's armor. Debilerol is a numbing, purple liquid that slows the target. The potency of these chemicals scales with the wielder's Science skill.
To acquire this weapon, progress through the main story of the Eridanos DLC until completing the “At the End of the Spectrum” quest at the RR&DD Labs. The weapon is held in a special container that is only opened by collecting all eight Spectrum Vodka varieties and submitting them to the nearby computer terminal. These can most easily be gathered at the Spectrum Distillery.
A prototype by the Rizzo Corporation, the Spectrum Gatling is a heavy weapon that can fire alternate damage types with each shot. The number of damage types used is based on the player’s science skill.
