Those who have seen the trailer for The Suicide Squad might be endeared to King Shark's dopey moments, but director James Gunn wants everyone to remember that that he's still a serial killer.
Following The Suicide Squad's trailer release, Gunn responded to a Twitter fan comment who stated "I swear, if [James Gunn] kills King Shark, I'll never watch his stuff again. Just look at this beautiful creature," accompanied by a photo of the shark-man having a meal. "He's gnawing on a human skull" Gunn pointed out, noting the gory contents of that specific image.
Prior to The Suicide Squad, King Shark notably appeared as a supporting cast member on DC Universe/HBO Max's Harley Quinn animated series, The CW's The Flash and in the DC Animated Movie Universe. He will also appear as a playable character in the upcoming video game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
While Gunn's trailer avoids story spoilers, it does feature King Shark -- voiced by none other than Sylvester Stallone -- as one of many convicts sent by Amanda Waller for a covert-op mission on Corto Maltese under Rick Flag's leadership. The character's trailer scenes depict his personality as a mix of innocently humorous moments, such as recognizing his own hand during a meeting with Waller, and incredibly bloodthirsty tendencies like eating a man whole and tearing a soldier in two.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
