WandaVision star Randall Park will move to the other side of the camera for his feature directorial debut.
Park will direct a movie adaptation of the 2007 graphic novel Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine, Variety reported. "I am such a huge fan of Adrian's work, and I'm very excited to team with him and Roadside Attractions on this updated, modern take of Shortcomings,' Park said. "In these characters, I see versions of Asian Americans in my own life — the ones I love and the ones I just kind of tolerate."
Shortcomings deals with the relationships between Ben Tanaka, his girlfriend Miko Hayashi and Ben's friend Alice Kim as they grapple in different ways with their cultural identities as Asians and their search for love. The stories originally appeared in the self-published indie comic Optic Nerve #9-#11 from 2004 to 2007 before the installments were collected.
The film will be produced by Roadside Attractions and Hieu Ho's Imminent Collision, along with Park and Michael Golamco. Tomine, who will adapt the screenplay, is an executive producer. The project is in development and they are seeking a distributor.
Tomine said, "Randall, Roadside Attractions and Imminent Collision immediately impressed me with their passion, insight and vision for this film. They have been invaluable partners in the process of translating Shortcomings both to the screen as well as to the current time, and I'm honored to be a part of this collaboration."
Tomine's other works include Killing and Dying and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Cartoonist. Park co-starred in WandaVision for Disney+, reprising his FBI Special Agent Jimmy Woo character from Ant-Man and The Wasp. He also starred in Fresh Off the Boat for six seasons from 2015 to 2020 and directed an episode. Shortcomings is his first film as director.
