Zack Snyder on Fans Mocking Batman v Superman's Martha Moment

Zack Snyder has heard all of the jokes and now, while discussing the upcoming release of Zack Snyder's Justice League on DC Cinematic Cast, the director reveals how he feels about the pivotal moment from 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the answer is that he's generally fine with it.

The scene in question occurs when Superman has been compelled to fight against Batman by Lex Luthor holding Superman's adoptive mother, Martha Kent, hostage. Batman, meanwhile, thinks that Superman is an inherent threat to humanity, so when Superman fights against him, he feels that it is reasonable for him to kill Superman. Batman uses kryptonite to gain an advantage over the Man of Steel, but as he is about to kill him, Superman, believing that he is about to die, pleads with Batman to at least "save Martha." What Superman, of course, did not know is that Bruce Wayne became Batman in the first place because of the senseless murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. when he was a child. Hearing his mother's name come up as a plea from Superman forces Batman to see Superman as human and Batman chooses not to kill him and the two heroes instead team up to rescue Martha from Luthor.

The whole "Martha? Why did you say that name?" sequence has been mocked by fans online for years and Snyder, naturally, has heard the jokes. When he was asked about how he felt about people continuing to make fun of that scene all these years later, Snyder explained, "You know, what can I say? I mean, it is what it is. We felt like that was the perfect bond between these two guys. Pop culture really wanted to have fun with that movie. They felt like kicking that movie in the in the crotch. And... it is what it is, you know? I don't know what to say other than, "Oh, well," you know? We still love it. And we think it's really cool."

However, the director also noted that while he thinks that the scene worked well, he is not angry at the people who make fun of the sequence, noting, "You know, I... I have no ill will toward anyone who wants to make a Martha joke. I'm just glad they're still talking about it."
