Zack Snyder's Justice League: Cyborg/Dr. Manhattan Similarities Are Intentional

Zack Snyder revealed to Justice League fans how 2009's Watchmen influenced his take on Cyborg's (Ray Fisher) seemingly limitless powers and his origin story.

The Justice League director explained why his take on Cyborg's origin and abilities runs parallel to Doctor Manhattan in Watchmen to Esquire. "It was a bit intentional," Snyder said. "That sequence where we learn about Cyborg's backstory is very Manhattanite." He added, "But I really love it. I love that kind of storytelling where it's just a lot of lacing together of these images to tell a story without a lot of dialogue -- just a little bit of VO."

"I was happy to tell Cyborg's story that way," the director continued. "If you really dig in, he's a giant character. He's got giant power. And that's kind of what that sequence is about: unrealized potential. Victor Stone speaks to all of us who are suffering from some depression or self-doubt -- we all have this massive untapped potential within us."

Snyder previously discussed how Watchmen influenced his approach to Justice League, saying he felt a "deep need" to deconstruct DC's icons. He also shared the fact that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen is his all-time favorite comic. Snyder's wife and producer Deborah Snyder also discussed how Cyborg was the heart of the movie, noting how a restored sequence featuring Victor Stone and his father brought her to tears.

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ray Porter as Darkseid, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The film is streaming now on HBO Max.
