Zack Snyder's Justice League Repeats Infinity War's Biggest Mistake

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Zack Snyder's Justice League, now streaming on HBO Max.

Zack Snyder's Justice League isn't the most cohesive film when it comes to its narrative, which should come as no surprise to any fan of the DC Extended Universe. From Man of Steel to Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,  there are inconsistencies, plot holes and bad character choices that make the stories incoherent at times. And that fact takes center stage when Wonder Woman reveals what happened in an extended look at Apokolips' first invasion of Earth centuries ago, which surprisingly, repeats Avengers: Infinity War's biggest mistake.

These flaws aren't as prevalent in Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but a glaring one was when Thanos assembled all the Infinity Stones in Wakanda and tried to blast Thor mid-air. The Asgardian king improvised on the fly and tossed Stormbreaker at the villain, which struck him in the chest.

Thor did this so he could descend, shove the ax deeper and gloat over the Mad Titan. Sadly, it was a costly decision, because had Thor gone for the head, the villain wouldn't have snapped half of life away. Those events led to Avengers: Endgame and more lives being lost, which really reiterates that the God of Thunder should have been more humble.

Come the Snyder Cut, Ares makes the same decision when he's fighting Darkseid as the Lord of Apokolips tries to implement the Unity and terraform the planet. With Zeus heating up Darseid's spear and making it fragile, Ares leaps up and crashes his ax down unto the tyrant. But rather than going for the head, he thrusts the blade into Darkseid's shoulder. He then pushes it down more, leaving the villain grimacing and in pain. In reality, though, Ares could have finished the job right there, but he wanted to bask in his opponent's agony.

As Parademons grab Darkseid and struggle to drag him back to their ship, Ares could still have jumped at them to finish the job. But instead, he leaves the villain to pass out in his ship. Of course, 5,000 years later, Darkseid sends Steppenwolf to Earth, which kickstarts a chain of events that has the ruler hellbent on another attack. When it comes down to it, though, had Ares killed Darkseid, the forces of Earth might have scared Apokolips off for good.

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ray Porter as Darkseid, CiarĂ¡n Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K.
