10 Hunter X Hunter Characters Who Deserved More Screen Time | CBR

Hunter X Hunter is a series loved by fans across the world for many reasons. While the plot and unique settings spark the viewers' interest, the peculiar characters are why viewers stick around to binge-watch the anime. The characters bring the story to life with their wild antics, varying personalities, and hilarious quirks.

The writer, Yoshihiro Togashi, was particular in the way he wrote each character to have their own story individual backstory and distinctive traits. Gon, Killua, and other main characters are all interesting enough to make the series enjoyable, but there are many more supporting characters with not as much screen time who've only enhanced the series further.

10 Ikalgo, Killua's Rival Turned Friend

Everyone's favorite octopus, Ikalgo, made his first appearance in the series during the Chimera Ant arc. He was a creature of the Chimera Ant species who started as Gon and Killua's rival. However, after he battled Killua and developed a newfound respect for him, Ikalgo decided to save Killua from any further harm. Ikalgo and Killua's friendship grew deeper as their journey went on and they became strong allies for one another. Ikalgo's story didn't carry on much longer as he only made a few appearances in the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc.

9 Mito Freecss, The Only Mother Gon Has Ever Known

Despite making appearances in five out of the seven animated story arcs, Mito Freecss, also known as Aunt Mito, was not seen as one of the main characters. Aunt Mito served as the maternal figure for Gon and was first introduced on the first episode of the series, during the Hunter Exam arm. Although she was not Gon's biological mother, she was his foster mother who raised him since he was a baby. Not much is known about her history, but it was revealed that she had a close relationship with Gon's father, Ging.

8 Canary, Killua's First Friend & Personal Body Gaurd

Recognized as one of the most underrated characters is Canary. She made her first appearance in the series during the Zoldyck Family arc and later returned to appear in the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. Canary was introduced as an apprentice butler for Killua Zoldyck's family. Outside of the knowledge that she was born in Meteor City, her past before working for the family of assassins is unknown. Canary's mysterious origin and superior assassination abilities leave fans wanting to see more of her.

7 Genthru, The Mass Murderer On Greed Island

Known as the leader of the Bomber group during the Greed Island arc, Genthru is a particularly maniacal character. As the main antagonist of the Greed Island arc, he was considered a major character.

Genthru was introduced as a kind character but it was later revealed that he was a mass murderer who had a love for killing. All that is known about Genthru's history is that he was hired to play the Greed Island game by Battera, leaving viewers all the more curious about him.

6 Melody, The One Who Touched Kurapika's Heart

First appearing in the Yorknew City arc was Melody, a Musical Hunter who quickly befriended Kurapika. After some time, she revealed her tragic past to Kurapika and explained her ability to read other's heartbeat. Although her backstory was shown, Melody's life after leaving Yorknew City was seldomly shown. She made appearances in the Greed Island arc and the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc that followed, but exactly how her relationships with the protagonists progressed remains unknown.

5 Palm Siberia, Gon's Temporary Girlfriend

One of the most intimidating and irrational characters in the series was none other than Palm. She started her journey as a Chimera Ant Extermination Team Member during the Chimera Ant arc. Palm was later abducted by Neferpitou and was changed to a Chimera Ant Experimental Soldier by Doctor Blythe and Shaiapouf. As a character who switched from an ally to an enemy, her story was especially interesting. She only appeared in the 13th Hunter Election Chairman arc that followed as one of the people to visit Gon in the hospital.

4 Pokkle, Ponzu's Right Hand Man

As a character who not only participated in but passed the Hunter Exam due to Killua's forfeit, Pokkle proved to be a talented character with strong abilities and great potential. Unfortunately, his journey was cut short when he made his last appearance in the series during the Chimera Ant arc. After being captured and taken to the Chimera Ant Nest, he was taken advantage of by Neferpitou, killed by Pig after revealing the secrets of Nen, and eaten by the Chimera Ant Queen.

3 Hanzo, The Skilled Ninja From Jappon

Despite not being one of the protagonists, Hanzo showed his skill by successfully passing the Hunter Exam on the first try. During the Hunter Exam arc, Hanzo readily revealed that he was a ninja who needed a Hunter License to search for an important scroll.

He went on to pass every one of the phases of the exam with ease. Hanzo later learned about Nen as Gon and Killua were at Heavens Arena and came back to escort the recovered Gon to the voting room for the Hunter Association, where Gon met his father Ging for the first time.

2 Ging Freecss, Gon's Long Lost Father

Ging, Gon's father, was a character who remained a mystery throughout nearly the entire series and was only shown through flashbacks or memories until the 13th Hunter Election Chairman arc. He was introduced as a member of the Zodiacs, a group comprised of 11 Hunters who were under Chairman Issac Netero's command. As a Zodiac, Ging made a return from his hiatus once Netero passed away to come up with the rules for the next election. In doing so, he was unexpectedly reunited with his son, Gon.

1 Kurapika, The Last Living Member Of The Kurta Clan

Although he was recognized as the main protagonist in the Yorknew City arc, Kurapika's major role in the series started to dwindle as the story progressed. He was shown briefly during the Greed Island arc and was absent during the Chimera Ant arc and the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. Kurapika's absence during Gon's stay at the hospital concerned Leorio, whose phone call was met with no answer. During that moment, Kurapika is shown avoiding distractions to stay focused on his mission to recover the Scarlet Eyes of the Kurta Clan.
