The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded with original series on Disney+ like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which has continued exploring the legacy of Captain America following the events of Avengers: Endgame both through established characters like Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, but also new characters like Lemar Hoskins/Battlestar.
Clé Bennett portrays the MCU's Hoskins who first appears alongside the new Captain America, John Walker, mirroring the pair's relationship from the comics. However, Hoskin's debut in the MCU has only scratched the surface of the character's comic history, so we'll be taking a closer look at Battlestar.
10 Former Superpowered Wrestler With The Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation
Much like John Walker prior to his costumed debut as Captain America and later U.S. Agent, Lemar Hoskins had a brief stint in the military before he sought out fame and fortune as a costumed wrestler with the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation.
The UCWF uniquely featured superpowered wrestlers like The Thing and D-Man, which led to a number of enhancements by the Power Broker. Hoskings was enhanced using the Power Broker's process which elevated his strength, speed and endurance beyond that of peak physicality.
9 Worked With The Bold Urban Commandos/BUCs
Hoskins didn't spend much time with the UCWF (despite returning for charity bouts over the years) and he was soon brought onto a group known as the Bold Urban Commandos who launched fake public attacks to help bolster the reputation of John Walker's first costumed identity, Super-Patriot.
When Walker was asked to take over as the new Captain America following Steve Rogers' resignation, only Hoskins was able to stay working with Walker in the public eye, which led to the other BUC's debut as the villainous Left-Winger and Right-Winger.
8 Bucky's Racial Connotations Led To His New Name As Battlestar
When Hoskins first joined Walker in their official positions with the government, they fulfilled the established roles of Captain America and his sidekick Bucky. However, creator Marc Gruenwald was unaware of the racial connotations the term held with African-American men until fellow writer Dwayne McDuffie intervened.
The two worked together to address the terminology in the comic while also creating Hoskins' own identity as Battlestar to better introduce the character as Captain America's partner instead of the sometimes demeaning position of a sidekick.
7 He Was Trained To Fight Like Captain America By Taskmaster
The governmental organization in charge of running Captain America's operations was known as the Commission on Superhuman Affairs, which had a number of shady resources at its disposal, including the services of the highly skilled mercenary known as Taskmaster.
Taskmaster has a unique photo-reflexive memory that allows him to master and replicate any fighting move or skill he witnesses, which he used to train schools of henchman over the years. The CSA hired Taskmaster to train Walker to use Captain America's fighting style to better prepare him with the shield, which was then passed on to Hoskins for his own shield work.
6 He Wields A Triangle Adamantium Shield Like Captain America's Original
Hoskins originally relied on his enhanced abilities when he first took on the role of Bucky for the CSA, though his new designation as Battlestar came with a new costume as well as new weapons, including his very own shield.
Unlike Walker's more recognizable disc version of Captain America's patriotic shield, Hoskins was given a special heater shield made out of Vibranium that homaged Steve Rogers's original triangular shield from World War II and soon became a recognizable icon of Battlestar's over his own costumed career.
5 He Worked As A Mercenary For Silver Sable And The Wild Pack
Battlestar resigned from the CSA following the faked assassination of John Walker that led to his secret debut as U.S. Agent, though he didn't retire from the costumed life altogether. After working alongside U.S. Agent and other heroes like Captain America and Falcon, Battlestar became a hired mercenary after he crossed paths with Silver Sable.
Battlestar became one of the leaders of her mercenary Wild Pack, which also further upgraded his body armor. Battlestar remained with the Wild Pack for years until they were ultimately disbanded by Silver Sable.
4 Was Romantically Involved With Former Mutant Terrorist Lightbright
While Battlestar was working with Silver Sable and her Wild Pack, he encountered a group of Somali mutants known as Bio-Genes who were attempting to remove U.S. military forces from their country.
Obax Majid was the superpowered member known as Lightbright who ultimately helped the Wild Pack in a confrontation with Hydra, which led to her invitation to join the Wild Pack. Lightbright and Battlestar soon entered into a romantic relationship together, though Lightbright soon joined the Intruders splinter group and their relationship ultimately fell apart.
3 Fought With An Anti-Registration Resistance Group During Civil War
When Captain America and Iron Man found themselves on opposite sides of the Superhuman Registration Act, a Civil War erupted that saw costumed heroes take sides for and against the SRA as the government turned on unregistered heroes.
While Captain America formed his own resistance with the Secret Avengers, heroes like Battlestar were forced into wartime alliances with characters like Typeface, Solo, and Gladiatrix as they fought for their freedom from the SRA against S.H.I.E.L.D.'s well-equipped "cape-killer" soldiers.
2 Fought Zombies As One Of Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.'s Superpowered Security Guards
The research facility known as Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. became a storage area and prison for unusually powered villains, which often required advanced security measures provided by one of Marvel's costumed superheroes.
The Thing, Quasar and Darkhawk have all worked as security chief's for Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. over the years, and Battlestar eventually found his own home there in the pages of Marvel Zombies Supreme, just in time to help defend Earth against an undead invasion from the Squadron Supreme universe.
1 Worked With A.R.M.O.R. And The Ducky Dozen Against Alternate Reality Nazi Zombies
Lemar Hoskins' work at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. dealing with alternate reality zombies led to his recruitment by Howard the Duck on a mission for the Alternate Reality Monitoring and Operational Response Agency/A.R.M.O.R.
Battlestar joined Howard the Duck and other characters like Dum Dum Dugan, Red Raven, and Blazing Skull. The "Ducky Dozen" were tasked with stopping an alternate reality horde of Nazi zombies from spreading their infection across the multiverse. While the team suffered heavy casualties, Battlestar survived and the Nazi zombies' expansion was stopped.
