Godzilla vs. Kong Art Reveals Detailed Look at Hollow Earth's Crab Kaiju

Concept art from Godzilla vs. Kong showcases an early design for the Hollow Earth crab monster.

"Concept art for Godzilla vs. Kong with the brilliant team at @thestudioadi I did back in 2018, very rewarding to see the final creature design be 1:1 with our concepts," Xander Smith wrote on Instagram, noting the similarities between his design and the final product. "Special thanks to @tom_woodruffjr and @alec_gillis for bringing me on. And congrats to @adamwingard on bringing all these monsters to life."

This is not the first time Smith commented on the crab design. The day after the film premiered in the U.S., he shared stills of the monster from its brief appearance in the movie. "Godzilla v[s.] Kong was so legit. What a ride. My contribution was small but really happy to say the final design in the film was 1:1 with my original concept that I designed with the brilliant team at @thestudioadi and @tom_woodruffjr," he wrote.

Of the many monsters that appear in the film, the crab kaiju has the least screen time, appearing in the scene where Kong, Dr. Nathan Lind, Dr. Ilene Andrews and Jia are exploring Hollow Earth for the first time. Other monsters the group encounter on the other side include Warbats and Hellhawks.

Legends collide in Godzilla vs. Kong as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans -- instigated by unseen forces -- is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
