Godzilla vs. Kong Sees Kaiju-Sized Opening Weekend | CBR

After over a year of subdued business due to the coronavirus pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong brought in a kaiju-level opening weekend at the domestic box office.

Godzilla vs. Kong grossed $11.6 million on Friday, bringing its domestic box office gross to $27.9 million after three days of release, as reported by Variety. The MonsterVerse film is the first movie to make over $10 million in one day domestically since 2020's Onward. By Sunday, the film is projected to gross between $42 million to $50 million domestically.

While Godzilla vs. Kong's domestic box office sales will be the lowest opening weekend in the MonsterVerse franchise, it's still on track to outshine all other theatrical debuts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Godzilla vs. Kong's projected $32 million three-day gross would not only be the largest opening weekend domestically, but its sales would also double the previous holder of that title -- the $16 million debut of Wonder Woman 1984.

Godzilla vs. Kong's domestic box office success was preceded by a similarly lucrative debut in international territories. Over the previous weekend, Godzilla vs. Kong opened to $121.8 million overseas, the first time a domestic total has opened to over $100+ million internationally since the pandemic began.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing theaters and on HBO Max.
