How Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl Sets Up a Sequel to the Image Crossover

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl #5 from Steve Niles, Marcelo Frusin, Sunny Gho and John Workman, on sale now.

The fifth and final issue of Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl brings their feud to a definitive end, with Mindy/Hit-Girl killing the impostor in green and yellow, or so she thinks, because Patience used a fake body in the van that Mindy blew up so she'd believe the new Kick-Ass was indeed dead. This allows Patience to officially retire, but a few key plot threads open up the realm of possibility for a sequel.

The final page has someone buying the Kick-Ass costume, which Patience auctioned off on eBay. The franchise can now follow someone else wearing the costume and trying to be Kick-Ass. This person could become successful on their own, or Mindy could find them to train them. She already saw one Kick-Ass protege fail in the past, so this could be a shot at redemption after Patience tainted the symbol.

Interestingly, Dave himself may have purchased it -- not to have as a souvenir, but to become a vigilante once more in New York. He pursued a cop career before, but he could always revert to the old ways, maybe even partnering with Hit-Girl for new missions due to his experience in the force.

Patience could also return to action. Before she retired, she killed off the Mexican cartel head that was coming after her business, so revenge could be on the horizon. A sequel can follow her going to Mexico if there's reprisal, while also seeking out Mindy for help. Both don't know each other's identities thus far, so if they seek this costume out, that can provide an opportunity for a conversation rather than a fight.

Mindy may also soon come to understand why the Afghan war vet decided to form a cartel, so she could control crime as a kingpin and get money for charity. It'd be yet another excruciating test for Patience, who seemed to have gotten a happy ending, going back to school and having her family besides her once more.

Lastly, some theorists believe Mindy might have bought the costume in the hopes of finding a new Kick-Ass herself to anoint, or she's tracking down the seller, which could lead her to Patience. While she may want revenge over the bait-and-switch,  there's also the possibility Mindy might understand her situation and look for a partnership akin to what she and Big Daddy once had. Patience's military skills are priceless, so Mindy could use her for back-up, whether domestically or internationally, which would be the perfect swan song for them both.
