WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Invincible Season 1, Episode 8, "Where I Really Come From," available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
The animated adaptation of Invincible has not pulled its punches in regards to graphic violence, but also in its raw emotional moments, with one scene in the Season 1 finale bringing a room of people to tears.
Series creator Robert Kirkman recalls that while observing Sandra Oh, who portrays Invincible's mother Debbie Grayson in the series, he and others watching her record lines during the season finale caused everyone in the room -- including himself -- to cry at the emotional power of her performance.
"Sandra Oh as Debbie is just the heart and soul of the series in a way that Debbie was not necessarily the heart and soul of the series in the comics. That's all down to Sandra Oh and how we knew she would do great stuff," Kirkman told CBR. "There's a scene in Episode 8 where she's having a conversation with Mark after his fight with Nolan and, in the recording booth, she's going through that scene and she's so emotional delivering these lines. I started tearing up and thinking it was really embarrassing and then I look to my left and literally everyone in the recording booth is also crying. [Laughs] She moved an entire room of people to tears with her performance. It's been a real roller coaster ride."
Kirkman was also personally surprised by how much emotion Zachary Quinto was able to imbue in the death of his character Rudy Connors' original body while observing that Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman was more effective than he could have ever imagined. Kirkman previously compared getting the opportunity to see actors portray the characters he created in fresh ways he hadn't anticipated as a way to sort of meet them again for the first time. And with Amazon Prime Video renewing Invincible for two additional seasons, even more characters are slated to make their appearance in the animated series.
Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Khary Payton, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder. The series is produced by Skybound, and executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert and Catherine Winder. The first season is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
