NBC Renews Young Rock for Season 2 | CBR

The life and times of the jabroni-beating, pie-eating, trailblazing, eyebrow-raising, all-around, smack-it-down people's champ are slated to return for a second season on NBC.

Per Variety, NBC has renewed Young Rock -- the sitcom based on the early life of professional wrestler turned Hollywood mega-star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson -- for Season 2. Kenan, NBC's sitcom starring Kenan Thompson, has been renewed for a second season as well.

"It has been a true joy to watch Dwayne Johnson and Kenan Thompson on NBC every week and see families connect with their relatable, entertaining and heartwarming stories," said Lisa Katz, president of scripted programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. "We're thrilled to renew both of these shows for another season and can't wait to see more from Dwayne, Kenan and the incredibly talented casts and producing teams behind each of them."

Young Rock premiered on NBC on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The 11th and final episode of Season 1 is slated to air this coming Tuesday, May 4. In the show, a modern-day Johnson (played by the man himself) is running in the 2032 United States presidential election. While on the campaign trail, the Brahma Bull often finds himself reminiscing on his youth.

The show focuses on three key eras from Johnson's life: his childhood in the early '80s, during which he is played by Adrian Groulx; his high school days in the late '80s, during which he is played by Bradley Constant; and his college days in the early '90s, during which he is played by Uli Latukefu. Interestingly enough, Latukefu was recently tapped for a mystery role in Johnson's upcoming DC superhero film Black Adam.

In real-life, Johnson -- a multi-time WWE Champion in his own right -- was introduced to the world of pro wrestling at a young age, being the son of Rocky Johnson and the grandson of "High Chief" Peter Maivia -- both eventual WWE Hall of Famers. As such, Young Rock sees Johnson rub elbows with the likes of The Iron Sheik, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and AndrĂ© the Giant, among others, as part of his upbringing.
