The upcoming female-led action film Gunpowder Milkshake just received a major Netflix deal.
Netflix not only bought Gunpowder Milkshake's rights from STX Films, but the film will also receive a future sequel and an international theatrical release, as reported by Deadline. Co-production company Studiocanal will hold onto Gunpowder Milkshake's international rights when it comes out in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, while STX will release the film in Canada, China and Latin America.
Photos for Gunpowder Milkshake were released last November showcasing its various cast members, which include Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Angela Bassett (9-1-1, Black Panther), Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians) and Carla Gugino (Gerald's Game). The film centers on "three generations of female assassins who fight to stop a vicious cycle of violence that has haunted their lives," by defending the life of a young girl named Emily (Chloe Coleman).
In addition to Gunpowder Milkshake, Netflix's upcoming movie lineup includes Zack Snyder's zombie film Army of the Dead, the Amy Adams-led thriller The Woman in the Window and the action-comedy Red Notice starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. Netflix also recently claimed the rights to two sequels to Rian Johnson's Knives Out, both of which will see Daniel Craig return as private detective Benoit Blanc.
Future movie roles for Gunpowder Milkshake's cast include Gillan returning as Nebula for the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder, while Yeoh will appear in both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and James Cameron's future Avatar sequels. Headey, meanwhile, recently starred in the British crime drama Twist.
Directed and co-written by Navot Papushado, Gunpowder Milkshake stars Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Chloe Coleman, Ralph Ineson, Adam Nagaitis, Michael Smiley, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti. The film currently does not have a release date.
