Marvel Wouldn't Tell Falcon and Winter Soldier Boss Steve Rogers' Fate

Steve Rogers never appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but that didn't stop people from wondering about his whereabouts. Showrunner Malcolm Spellman confirmed that, much like the audience and the characters in the show, he doesn't know where Rogers is either.

In an interview with Inverse, Spellman discussed the unknown fate of Steve Rogers and how that affected the writing. "I’ve got to tell you the truth, my friend," said Spellman. "Marvel won’t tell me what happened to Steve, so we were able to write whatever we wanted because we don’t know. We're wondering if Steve's on the moon too, you know what I’m saying? That's as good a guess as anything because they won't tell me."

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thanos is defeated and Steve Rogers goes back in time to return the Infinity Stones to the places they were found. He then lives out his life with Peggy Carter, returning to Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Bruce Banner as an old man. He gives Sam his shield, leading to the events of the series, but that was the last fans have seen of him.

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Steve's presence was felt despite never having appeared onscreen. First Lieutenant and Sam's partner Joaquín Torres brings up the rumor that Steve's on a secret moon base (a reference to the moon base that appeared in the comic book mini-series Original Sin). The conspiracy theory is brought up again in the series finale when Sam makes his debut as Captain America, and a man in the GRC headquarters says that he thought the hero was on the moon. Others simply believe that Rogers is dead.

Adding to the mystery, it's been rumored that Chris Evans will return for a future Marvel project. Though the nature of his return hasn't been revealed, it's been reported that Captain America 4, which will focus on Wilson's turn at Cap, won't be that project.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series is now streaming on Disney+.
