WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Challenge of the Super Sons #12 by Peter Tomasi, Evan Stanley, Luis Guerrero and Rob Leigh, on sale now.
One of the nicest things about Challenge of the Super Sons has been hearing the boys talk about things they miss doing when they're not fighting crime. This is a reminder that as much as they're superheroes, they're kids first and foremost, so things like snacking on junk food, going to movies, and watching TV are all hobbies they wish they had more time to enjoy.
In the latest issue, one other major aspect of teenage adolescence pops up for Jon Kent in the form of having a crush, and in the process, he gets his first unofficial girlfriend.
Superboy and Robin have been kidnapped by Felix Faust and Vandal Savage in the past, but luckily, Faust's turncoat assistant, Rora, frees them. She uses a fake Justice League to distract the fiends and as she liberates the boys, she uses her magic to conjure up the Doom Scroll. She does this to save the Justice League in the future and stop the tyrants, but also because of some mysterious destiny she can't reveal just yet.
This brings her journey full-circle with the boys as she's been helping them for some time now, becoming quite close to Jon along the way. He's more emotional and open than Damian, qualities which Rora always gravitated toward. This creates a sentimental goodbye as they're about to go through the timestream and escape this medieval realm, leaving Rora a bit wistful.
Just before the boys head through the escape portal, Rora plants a kiss on Jon's cheek, leaving him blushing, flushed, and dazed, much to Damian's annoyance. It's a warm, endearing moment as Rora knows the hero he'll grow up to be, even holding hands with him and calling him "Superman" in their conversations.
It gives Jon confidence, inspiring him for the future because he knows if a selfless person like Rora endorses him, he has to live up to her expectations as a hero. It's a nice cap to their youthful bond as he did find her cute when they met, but couldn't move beyond his shyness enough to approach her. But before he departs, at least he gets his first peck,.
