WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Mayans M.C. Season 3, Episode 8, "A Mixed-Up and Splendid Rescue," which aired Tuesday on FX.
In order to start a war against the Vatos Malditos biker gang, Che "Taza" Romero did the unthinkable and killed Michael "Riz" Ariza, one of his brothers in the Santo Padre Mayans, after he was shot by the group. This resulted in the Santo Padre Mayans massacring the Vatos Malditos, though the group failed to kill the incredibly dangerous El Palo, who has been angling to get his revenge ever since. Now, Mayans M.C.'s latest episode, "A Mixed-Up and Splendid Rescue," has revealed just why Taza wanted to start a war with the Vatos Malditos -- and it has to do with the man he loved.
Earlier in Mayans M.C. Season 3, Taza went to Palo's sister, Laura, to get information on just where her brother was. During that conversation, Laura and Taza made clear that another man named David was killed, which fractured their relationship majorly. In "A Mixed-Up and Splendid Rescue," Laura talks to Taza at the Santo Padre clubhouse. There, Laura tells him that she initially blamed Taza for David's death. However, Laura soon came to blame herself, as she gave Palo the information that resulted in David's death.
Taza then makes clear that neither of them are responsible for David's death and that Palo murdered their loved one because he was queer. David and Taza, for their part, were in a relationship. However, since David's death, Taza hasn't really dated anyone else, as he's afraid to suffer such a huge loss again. He also hasn't told his Santo Padre brothers about his sexuality. In response to this revelation, Laura gives David's cross to Taza and tells him that her brother would have wanted the Santo Padre Mayan to be happy.
While Taza's exact sexual orientation wasn't made explicitly clear in the episode, actor Raoul Trujillo has said that Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James indicated the character is bisexual. "Taza's relationship with David was based on love and wasn't merely a sexual thing," Trujillo told Entertainment Weekly. "Elgin and I were always very clear about that. He asked me ahead of the season if I was comfortable with playing a bisexual man, and I told him I was ready to do whatever he needed me to do for the show."
"Taza and David's love story was born from two hearts that connected," Trujillo said, characterizing the relationship and its importance to the series. "Elgin wanted to explore this taboo subject, which goes beyond biker culture to prisons where connections happen among convicts. These are very real elements that exist. We know this could lead to some blowback because these types of things are not to be talked about."
With the truth about just why Taza hates Palo revealed, the two are sure to come into direct conflict before Mayans M.C. Season 3 is over. And when that happens, Taza is finally going to get his chance to get revenge on the man who killed the person he loved. However, the cost for that revenge may, as is befitting such tales, be everything, especially since Palo has recruited the incredibly powerful gangster known as El Banquero to his side.
Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, Mayans M.C. stars J.D. Pardo as EZ Reyes, Clayton Cardenas as Angel Reyes, Sarah Bolger as Emily Galindo, Michael Irby as Obispo "Bishop" Losa, Carla Baratta as Luisa "Adelita" Espina, Richard Cabral as Johnny "Coco" Cruz, Raoul Trujillo as Che "Taza" Romero, Danny Pino as Miguel Galindo, Edward James Olmos as Felipe Reyes and Emilio Rivera as Marcus Álvarez. New episodes air Tuesday on FX and are made available the following day on Hulu.
