One Piece: 10 Characters Who Are Better Protagonists Than Luffy

Being such a long-running series, One Piece has an enormous cast of characters and has been known to spend a decent amount of time on characters that aren't even close to the Straw Hats. Luffy is the protagonist of the series, but is his story the best one to tell?

Luffy's journey to becoming the Pirate King is an interesting adventure to see, but other characters have the potential to be even better main characters than the rubber man. Their time in the spotlight may not be as fun or light, but they would still be well worth getting a turn in the show's driver seat.

10 Jimbei & His Journey From Sun Pirate To Straw Hat

Jimbei became a major character in the series as soon as he was properly introduced in the Impel Down arc. As one of the older and stronger characters in the series, Jimbei has had a past that, if explored, would make him an excellent protagonist.

Watching his journeys as a member of the Sun Pirates with Fisher Tiger would be exciting and seeing how he grows into the kind of person to help Luffy at Marineford and eventually join the Straw Hats would keep anyone entertained.

9 Nico Robin & Her Time From Ohara To Alabasta

Nico Robin has one of the darker backstories out of all the Straw Hats. Her people were murdered and their island was destroyed by the Marines in order to destroy the knowledge they held, but Nico Robin was the only survivor.

Fans of One Piece know that she went on the run after this and eventually joined up with Crocodile in Alabasta, but seeing her journey to get there would be the perfect time for her to be the protagonist. She could show fans the darker side of the world and what it takes to survive in One Piece when everything else has been taken away.

8 Gol D. Roger & The Formation Of The Roger Pirates

Gol D. Roger was the first and only man so far to be known as the King of the Pirates. Viewers were given more insight into Roger and his crew during the tale of Kozuki Oden's journey with him, but that's not enough.

Roger could easily be the main character of a prequel of One Piece. After all, he's the one that found the treasure to begin with. Seeing him start from scratch and build up one of the greatest pirate crews to ever exist would be an amazing story to follow.

7 Bartholomew Kuma & His Tale Of Going Undercover As A Warlord

Bartholomew Kuma was a Warlord and incredibly powerful before the time skip, but it was also revealed that he was a member of the Revolutionary Army. Kuma is partially robotic, even more so than Franky, but he wasn't always like that.

The intrigue of being a double agent and the slow progression from human to robot would be great concepts to explore in a protagonist, and Kuma's origin story would be a great place to explore those ideas with him as the main character.

6 Monkey D. Garp As A Young Marine

Luffy's grandfather has been shown to be one of the Marine's most powerful fighters and has even been offered the position of Admiral several times. He even fought off the Rocks Pirates alone, despite the crew containing some of the most dangerous pirates of their time.

Following Garp during his younger days would be a great way for him to be the protagonist. This would show how he was able to attain such strength and could even dip into his disagreements and eventual falling out with his son, Monkey D. Dragon.

5 Koby & His Time With The Marines After Leaving Luffy

One Piece fans have gotten a massive dose of what it's like to live in the world as a pirate, but what's it like for the marines? Coby is the perfect main character to follow to show just what it's like trying to become a force for justice in a world overrun with pirates and evil.

Coby has clearly experienced a ton of growth since his debut, rivaling even Luffy in how much he's changed. Watching how he balances his friendship with Luffy and his duties as a Marine would be interesting to watch.

4 Brook & His Voyage Before Dying

Brook hasn't shared too much of his backstory with the Straw Hats besides his previous crew dying and his relationship with Laboon. Fans know that his crew consisted entirely of musicians, but seeing their voyages from Brook's perspective would make for an interesting story.

He's an interesting character who is surprisingly reliable, and seeing him grow into the pirate that would eventually join Luffy would be a story well worth exploring.

3 Buggy & His Growth After The Roger Pirates Disbanded

Buggy was an interesting character as soon as he appeared in One Piece. Instead of being a one-off villain, he became a recurring character that apparently sailed with Gol D. Roger.

He fell ill when Roger went to the final island, and shortly afterward, the Roger Pirates disbanded. Following Buggy's journey to make a name for himself and lead a crew of his own would be a humorous and enjoyable story that anyone would love to spectate. Buggy is the perfect main character for a slapstick view of One Piece.

2 Boa Hancock & Her Life On The Run To Becoming A Warlord

Boa Hancock is one of the most well-known Warlords in One Piece thanks to her introduction directly involving Luffy. Her backstory was somewhat revealed during Luffy's time on Amazon Lily, but diving deeper into her past with her as the protagonist would make for a great series.

Her character arc would be necessary yet sad as she has to go from a scared little girl into a cold warlord in order to keep herself and her sisters safe from harm.

1 X. Drake & His Time Going From Rear Admiral To Pirate Captain

X. Drake is a member of the Worst Generation and has recently come back into the spotlight during the Wano arc. At first, he just seemed to be another pirate captain that Luffy would have to deal with in his journey to stop Kaido, but it's recently been revealed that Drake is actually a rear admiral in the military being used as a spy.

Double agents always make for interesting stories, so Drake being the protagonist of a show showing his transition from Marine to pirate would be an interesting tale.
