Pixar Debuts Clip from Its Soul Prequel Short, 22 vs Earth | CBR

Pixar's short film 22 vs. Earth, a prequel to Soul, drops its first official clip.

The 22 vs. Earth clip features 22 (Tina Fey) rounding up five different souls by various means -- including a fishing pole and a cardboard box. She then attempts to convince them in stopping souls from transitioning to Earth from the Great Beyond, with decidedly mixed results. 22 also comes up with a name for the group that has rather sinister connotations.

22 vs. Earth will explore 22's life before she met Joe Gardner in Soul. Specifically, the short film will examine 22's reasons for hating Earth.

"While making Soul we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie," director Kevin Nolting stated, while discussing the origins of 22 vs. Earth. The director added, "22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material."

Disney+ previously released a collection of animated shorts titled Pixar Popcorn in January, which featured multiple protagonists from its films. One short, Soul of the City, took place after the events of Soul and featured various characters from the films.

22 vs. Earth will be available to stream on Disney+ on April 30.
