WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #5 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.
As the Omega Rangers, Jason, Zack and Trini have been tearing their way through the stars in the hopes of staving off an invasion by the all-powerful Empyreals before it can begin. Lord Drakkon is their only lead, and bringing him along for the ride means that they just betrayed Zordon and their former teammates. Now, the Omegas aren't only chasing down the greatest enemy they've come across; they're also on the run from their closest allies and anyone else on good terms with them.
But as Power Rangers #5 proves, Zordon's allies include one of the most beloved teams in Power Ranger history, the S.P.D.. Unfortunately for the Omegas, they've just become the villains of their own story, and the Space Patrol Delta is after them.
After escaping Earth with Lord Drakkon in tow, the Omega Rangers were forced to make an emergency stop on the planet Onyx. This desolate, near-deserted world is home to the most ruthless villains in the galaxy. Onyx isn't friendly to Power Rangers, either, and when Jason and Zack's cover is blown, they find themselves narrowly avoiding a brutal beatdown. Even though they're clearly playing hero, that doesn't keep them from being lassoed and arrested when the real peace keepers arrive in the form of the Space Patrol Delta.
In the Power Rangers television franchise, the S.P.D. exists in a futuristic 2025. In this timeline, Earth has opened its arms to alien beings from all across the galaxy, except for the Troobian Empire which is hellbent on conquering every world in its path. The original S.P.D. Rangers all disappear during an away mission, so the world is left in the hands of the B-Squad. This team of human Rangers would go on to face off against their predecessors as well as the other various threats facing their world in a series that still stands as one of the franchise's most beloved incarnations.
The version of the S.P.D. that readers are presented to in the latest issue of Power Rangers is far from the series that fans are used to. While the S.P.D. are clearly closely allied with Zordon, nothing about them indicates that the officers introduced in this issue have any connection to the Morphin Grid.
This S.P.D. knows all about Drakkon having been whisked away by the Omega Rangers, and are intent on returning all of them to Earth immediately. But apart from the name, there is nothing that ties them into the original series that has become so well revered. While it's likely only a matter of time until the fan-favorite S.P.D. team makes its way to comics, it doesn't look like that will be happening any time soon.
