Star Trek: Lower Decks Gets S3 Renewal, S2 Teaser Reveals Premiere Date

The half-hour animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks received an early Season 3 renewal by Paramount+, along with a teaser trailer revealing when Season 2 debuts.

The Lower Deck Season 3 renewal and Season 2 trailer were released during Star Trek's First Contact Day, which is the day that humans first make contact with Vulcans in 1996's Star Trek: First Contact. Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, revealed on Twitter that "Season 3 IS A GO" while dropping Vulcan salute emojis. Season 2 of Lower Decks debuts Aug. 12.

The 30-second teaser features the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos getting into more wacky adventures. "We doing sci-fi stuff today," Beckett Mariner says to her fellow crew members during a meal. The action then jumps to a quick sizzle reel showing the U.S.S. Cerritos being chased through an asteroid storm while being shot at with a laser, a large angry gorilla with a horn on its head, an American Gladiators-style competition, an attack on a base of operations, a gang of snakes at a space bar and much more. "Only thing missing is Boimler," D'Vana Tendi says. "He's gotta be having the time of his life." Of course, Boimler is then shown having anything but the time of his life as their ship is under attack, sending him screaming as they soar into a space storm.

Streaming on Paramount+, Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, Gillian Vigman as Doctor T'Ana and Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs. Season 2 premieres Aug. 12.
