Sonic the Hedgehog will face new threats when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 speeds into theaters in 2022. However, this time, he won't be fighting alone.
Photos from the set of the film provided by the Sonic the Hedgehog News & Updates · Tails' Channel Twitter account showcase a first look at Knuckles the Red Echidna, or at least his physical stand-in while the movies continues with principal photography. The character will be inserted into the film digitally as production continues.
Also featured in the images is the film's titular hero and Tails, who was teased during the mid-credits scene of the first Sonic movie. The photos also confirm that James Marsden and Tika Sumpter will return for the sequel.
Knuckles' appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been rumored since late 2020. According to those reports, the character will have a significant role in the film. Furthermore, he will have the ability to glide and climb walls with his spiked hands, similar to his skills in the video games. Paramount Pictures is looking to cast a voice actor who is "serious in nature, but still gullible at times." Currently, Aquaman star Jason Momoa is rumored to be taking on the voice role, but nothing is confirmed.
In the Sonic video game series, Knuckles first appeared in 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He starts off as a villain after being tricked by Doctor Eggman to fight Sonic and Tails. However, in 1994's Sonic & Knuckles, he switches sides and helps his former enemies defeat Doctor Eggman.
Released in February of 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog follows the Blue Blur (voiced by Schwartz) as he fights to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from taking over the world. The movie opened to $70 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, earning the largest opening for a video game-based film. It ended up bringing in a total of $319.7 million worldwide off an $85 million budget.
Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy announced that they were developing a sequel to the hit film adaptation of the popular video game franchise back in May. Jeff Fowler is expected to return to direct and Pat Casey and Josh Miller will once again write the script.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz. The film arrives in theaters April 8, 2022.
