Director Steven Spielberg's upcoming film treatment of West Side Story, which is being released under Disney's 20th Century Studios banner, released its first official teaser trailer during the 93rd Academy Awards.
Steven Spielberg's West Side Story is slated to arrive in theaters later this year on Dec. 10. The film marks the big screen debut of actor Rachel Zegler as the female lead, Maria. Zegler is also slated to appear in DC and Warner Bros.' upcoming DC Extended Universe film Shazam! Fury of the Gods -- the sequel to 2019's Shazam! -- in an undisclosed role. That film is currently scheduled for release on June 2, 2023.
Set in 1950s New York City, West Side Story follows two teenagers -- Tony and Maria -- who fall in love, despite having affiliations with rival street gangs. Spielberg's film was conceived as a remake of the 1961 film of the same name directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, though is expected to be a more faithful adaptation of the original 1957 Broadway musical by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (which was itself inspired by William Shakespeare's 1597 play Romeo and Juliet). The new film was originally slated for release on Dec. 18, 2020, but was delayed by one year as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
