A24's The Green Knight Debuts New Character Posters | CBR

A24 has released a quartet of character posters for The Green Knight.

The posters feature the titular Green Knight, who appears to be formed out of a tree, and Dev Patel's Sir Gawain. All four of the posters bear the same tagline: "One year hence." This is in reference to the Arthurian legend, which saw Gawain cut off the head of the Green Knight with a single stroke. However, the Knight reattached his head and told Gawain to expect a similar blow in a year's time.

The Green Knight was originally slated to premiere on May 20, 2020, and would have made its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to the cancellation of SX, and to A24 pulling The Green Knight from its original release date. The Green Knight is now slated for a July release and received an R-rating for  "violence, some sexuality, and graphic nudity."

The Green Knight also spawned a tabletop RPG game, co-created by David Lowery and professional Game Master Timm Woods. The game sends players off on a quest for the Green Knight, as they encounter multiple threats along the way. The Green Knight: A Fantasy Role-Playing Game is currently available to order on A24's official website.

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

Written and directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan and Ralph Ineson. It will premiere in theaters on July 30, 2021.
