Dave Bautista Wants to Be a Vulnerable Action Hero | CBR

Army of the Dead's Dave Bautista doesn't aim to be an "Alpha male" action hero.

Bautista shared how he differs from male actors portraying hyper-masculine figures in action films to Vulture. When asked how he's both "badass" and shows a "warmth" on screen, he said, "I think a lot of guys who would be playing action stars are looking for ways to make themselves more alpha, more masculine, more heroic. I'm always looking for the opposite."

The Drax actor continued, "I'm looking for ways to kind of take away from my stature and physicality, to make me more vulnerable. It was something that I learned about myself in professional wrestling, and it’s been the same in film. So, I do little things. When I carry myself, I don’t always have my chest out or have pumped-out arms. I don't want to look like an action figure. I want to humanize myself and make myself more relatable -- which is not easy to do when you’re built like a gorilla. Anything I can do to take away from my physicality helps, and glasses seem to go a long way."

Bautista, the WWE superstar turned action film star, recently made a surprise voice cameo during WWE's Backlash event, which also served to promote his starring role in Zack Snyder's zombie heist film, Army of the Dead. The promo clip also splices in footage from Snyder's upcoming film, Army of the Dead, which stars Bautista as Scott Ward -- a war hero turned mercenary who finds himself breaking into a casino in the middle of a zombie outbreak.

The official synopsis for Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead reads,

Army of the Dead takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. When Scott Ward, a former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home, is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka, it’s with the ultimate proposition: break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours. With little left to lose, Ward takes on the challenge, assembling a ragtag team of experts for the heist. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing's for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all.

Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi and Ana de la Reguera. The film is streaming now on Netflix.
