The cyberpunk genre translates well into the world of video games, and after last year's massive launch of Cyberpunk 2077, fans of the genre are already awaiting the next futuristic adventure. Now, one indie game launching this summer aims to be the next big cyberpunk hit. Easily one of the most interesting Xbox console exclusives to be announced last year, The Ascent is a cyberpunk action-RPG that blends together twin-stick shooting, a Diablo-like loot system and a pitch-perfect cyberpunk aesthetic.
Developed by Swedish indie studio Neon Giant and published by Curve Digital, The Ascent takes place in a gritty cyberpunk world called Veles. When a megacorporation known as The Ascent Group collapses, many underworld forces rush to fill the void left behind. After creating a character, players are thrust into the dangerous cyberpunk streets on a mission to get ahead in a world filled with danger and despair. The Ascent combines a great visual style with satisfying mechanics to deliver what could be the next must-buy cyberpunk game for fans of the genre.
Upon first glance, The Ascent stands out with its art style and graphical brilliance. It evokes a mixture of the cyberpunk noir of Blade Runner and the fantasy-sci-fi worlds of the classic Shadowrun series with its neon-drenched streets and gritty atmosphere. The world of The Ascent is one of megacorporations, highly modified cybernetic characters and lawlessness where those with the most firepower and skill can make a name for themselves through violence and criminal acts.
When the action gets heavy The Ascent really lays on heaps of particle effects, with projectiles ricocheting off walls, enemies cracking the floors with powerful cybernetic enhanced attacks, plus all manner of flourishes that pair so well with the realistic cyberpunk look of the environments. Whether fighting out of the industrial nether regions under the massive city or perusing the shops in the crime-ridden streets above, The Ascent nails its aesthetic and is a visual treat for fans of the genre.
As for gameplay, fans of isometric action games will feel right at home in its twin-stick mechanics. Although The Ascent may be reminiscent of more traditional isometric RPGs, in action, it is very much a shooter full of interesting mechanics. Positioning is key, and players can duck behind cover dynamically while hitting a button to raise the character's arms for a tactical advantage. This system can also be used outside of cover to line up headshots by aiming at an elevated level. This mechanic is a new idea for the tried and true twin-stick genre, and it makes combat all the more strategic. On top of this, a quick dodge is also available for players to avoid powerful attacks and proves another key mechanic in The Ascent's impressively hard-hitting combat encounters.
Like many good cyberpunk games full of modified humans and bioengineering technology, The Ascent allows players to fully customize the protagonist. Along with the two weapon slots, each character can also equip two abilities using cybernetic implants that add powerful options for specific types of builds. The Ascent also features a robust loot system, with drops of various unique weaponry and equipment that allows players to create a combatant who can fit a myriad of styles.
The Ascent may play like fellow cyberpunk shooter Ruiner, but it differs in the way that it delivers a surprising amount of depth and freedom in its approach to combat. Whether that means building an evasion-focused light-armored warrior, a hulking tank-like brawler or any combination in between, The Ascent's level of customization is something that action-RPG fans will love.
Furthermore, The Ascent can even be played online with up to four players cooperatively, further adding to the level of customization as players can build the ultimate team of mercenaries, able to tackle any dangerous foe. All of these options come together fluidly, making The Ascent a blast to play.
By combining the arcade action of a twin-stick shooter with a Diablo-like loot system and strong RPG mechanics, The Ascent delivers solid gameplay inside of an ultra-slick visual package. Giving this action-RPG a chance should be a no brainer for fans of the cyberpunk genre. Plus, it will be available on Game Pass at launch, meaning there's ample opportunity to check out what The Ascent has in store when it releases on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on July 29.
