F9 Video Shows What Makes the Fast & Furious Women Fearless | CBR

A new F9 promotional video is putting a spotlight on its female characters, both old and new.

Titled "The Women of FAST & FURIOUS 9," the video opens with longtime Fast & Furious alumni Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez discussing their franchise's unique twenty-year appeal. According to Rodriguez, "It really sheds light on the female voice in action movies." with Nathalie Emmanuel calls it "so exciting to have so many badass women in Fast 9," including some newcomers played by Anna Sawai and Cardi B.

Among these interview segments are clips of the Fast & Furious women in various action scenes, from Rodriguez's Letty fighting goons to Magdalene Shaw (Helen Mirren) evading police cars in London. "Fast females take ownership of it," explained Charlize Theron, who noted how these characters "raise the bar" and "do the unexpected" with each new entry. Cardi B put this sentiment in much simpler terms: "It's freaking Fast & Furious."

In addition to Mirren and Theron reprising their roles from The Fate of the Furious as Shaw and cyber-terrorist Cipher, F9 also marks Brewster's official franchise return since Furious 7. The 2015 film ended with Mia and Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) leaving Dominic Toretto's crew to raise their child together, a conclusion that paid tribute to Walker's tragic death during production. The film's plot teases Cipher teaming up with a new character named Jakob (John Cena) to get revenge on Dom, who is revealed to be his and Mia's brother. F9 will also see the return of Han (Sung Kang), whose supposed death in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was later revealed to be the work of Magdalene's son Deckard Shaw.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film arrives in theaters June 25.
