Falcon and Winter Soldier Considered Sam Wilson's Superpower

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman revealed that the series considered giving Sam his superpower from the comics -- telepathically connecting to birds.

"It is… You know actually I’m gonna take a leap and answer this one because I don’t think I can get in trouble for it," Spellman told UNILAD when asked about whether or not this superpower was ever planned for the show. "It was discussed in the room but I don’t think anyone in the room felt like there was a way to do that right, you know what I’m saying?"

The showrunner added, "I don’t know what’s gonna happen in Cap 4 though… I probably just overstepped with you [UNILAD] so that’s your one spoiler."

In Marvel Comics, Wilson doesn't just have mechanical wings that grant him the ability to fly. After an encounter with the Cosmic Cube, Wilson develops a telepathic bond with his bird companion Redwing. Over time, this power evolved so that Wilson was able to access the vision and memories of all other birds.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Falcon's superpowers have been dropped in favor of a more grounded take on Sam Wilson. For instance, Wilson's falcon friend Redwing has been turned into a drone. While there have been no hints of Wilson having any kind of telepathic abilities -- bird-related or otherwise -- Spellman's comments indicate that the door is left open for the power to be potentially introduced in the next Captain America movie.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The entire first season is available to stream on Disney+.
