Now that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is over, Screen Junkies treated the Marvel Studios series to an Honest Trailer treatment, calling out the show's plot holes.
Described as a story about "Marvel's latest Avengers you didn't really care about, until they got their own TV show," the Honest Trailer opens by mocking the power levels of its heroes. Sam Wilson becomes "a man with the power of a jetpack he rents from the Air Force," while Bucky Barnes' actions are touted as "proof that men will literally scour the criminal safe haven of Madripoor instead of going to therapy." The duo's camaraderie is called "forced" arguing, filled with jokes and non-stop talk about Steve Roger's Captain America shield.
The trailer also critiques the plot-driven behavioral patterns of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's morally complicated supporting cast and antagonists. This includes Helmut Zemo's conversations about the Black experience, John Walker's proficiency for breaking through doors and windows, and Sharon Carter becoming "bitter and resentful since the man she stalked for a living went back in time to bang her great aunt."
Even the show's topical issues are satirized, noting that the Flag Smashers' seemingly reasonable motives are undermined by Karli's acts of murder and, as Captain America, Sam's ability to combat the world's problems amounts to him simply telling politicians to do better.
Despite these remarks, Honest Trailers still praised the show for how it "deepens existing characters, brings some big-budget action to the small screen and adds crucial new information to the Marvel universe." That last point, however, referred to the revelation that there's no official Avengers salary in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Falcon and Winter Soldier was Marvel's second live-action series on Disney+, following WandaVision -- which jumpstarted the MCU's Phase 4. In June, Loki and Marvel's What If...? will debut. Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye will follow in late-2021. Future Disney+ series include She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Iron Heart, Secret Invasion and Armor Wars.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The entire first season is available to stream on Disney+.
