Heroes Reborn: Marvel's New Reality Gives Doctor Doom What He Always Wanted

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Heroes Reborn #1 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Matthew Wilson and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

Doctor Doom has been a power-mad tyrant since his creation. The ruler of Latveria, like many great villains, desires to rule over all he sees, and the new Heroes Reborn event has given Doom almost exactly the kind of power he's always craved. Ever since his first appearance in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's classic Fantastic Four #5, Doom has sought several different forms of power, studying science and sorcery, before eventually becoming the ruler of his homeland, Latveria. Although he's wielded different kinds of power over the years, Heroes Reborn gives Doom a new set of abilities.

During Heroes Reborn #1, by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness, Doom is granted a major power upgrade. In this altered reality where the Avengers never formed, Doom stands on the White House lawn, boasting about how he found the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. This gem is the same power source for the Juggernaut, making its wielder essentially unstoppable.

After giving one of his trademark speeches, Doom plows through White House security with ease, demonstrating just how strong the Crimson Gem has made him. In fact, Doom now refers to himself as Doctor Juggernaut. Interestingly enough, Doom has his last name spelled out across his knuckles, emphasizing his confidence in his newfound power.

Doctor Juggernaut is strong enough to face Hyperion in single combat. This is much more physical power than Doom usually has, considering Hyperion is Marvel's equivalent of Superman. Hyperion even mentions that Doom is so powerful that he can only be contained within the Negative Zone. Doom isn't alone, either. In this reality, Doctor Juggernaut has his own team, the Masters of Doom. This group is made up of very powerful villains such as the Black Skull, a hybrid of the Red Skull and Venom.

With the physical strength of the Juggernaut and his own group of villains, this reality's Victor Von Doom has multiple kinds of power. Still, this isn't the first time that Doom has wielded immense amounts of power.

One of Doom's first major feats was stealing the Silver Surfer's power cosmic, in 1966's Fantastic Four #57, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In the following issues, Doom handily defeated the Fantastic Four and celebrated by rampaging across the planet.

The power that Doom wielded was just as much, if not more than the power he possesses in Heroes Reborn. Doom was only stopped when he was tricked into hitting the barrier that Galactus created around the Earth, returning the Surfer's power. Doom grew even more powerful in 1985's Secret Wars #10, by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck. During this event, Doom took the opportunity to steal the Beyonder's cosmic power for himself.

Doom reached his most powerful form, however, in 2015's Secret Wars #2, by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic. After the multiverse collapsed, Doom used the power he stole from the Beyonders to create his own Battleworld, made of worlds from different universes. Doctor Doom became God Emperor Doom, shaping the world how he saw fit. Inevitably, Reed Richards found a way to defeat Doom, stripping him of his power and restoring the multiverse. Time after time, Doom has either been undone by his own ambition or self-doubt.

In Heroes Reborn, Doom certainly has a lot of new power, considering his physical might and the Masters of Doom under his command. Still, the villainous tyrant has lost control over Latveria, since the Squadron Supreme instated free elections. Without rule of his sovereign nation, the former dictator doesn't have as much power as he'd like, although it's unlikely that Doom will ever stop craving more.
