Much like the comic book series that inspired it, Invincible plans to subvert viewers' expectations -- and that includes the ones who are familiar with the comics.
Speaking to AV Club, series co-creator/executive producer Robert Kirkman said he wanted to surprise comic readers as much as the casual viewer. "I’m always acutely aware of the fact that one of the appeals of this comic is how frequently unexpected things happen. I want to try and maintain that as much as I can for the audience that has read the comic and is now watching the show," Kirkman said.
Kirkman continued, "By changing and rearranging things, even if you have read the comics, you still get the sense of, 'Oh, I didn’t expect this already' or 'Oh, I thought this character would be like this or do this but isn’t.' It brings a little of that excitement from the comics into the show."
Invincible has already made quite a few changes to its source material. Cecil Steadman, the head of the Global Defense Agency, made an appearance in the second episode while Mark's girlfriend Amber Bennett -- who Mark didn't start dating until he entered college -- was present from the series' beginning. Kirkman previously discussed Cecil's early introduction with CBR, saying that his experience with The Walking Dead's television adaptation taught him to be open to changes in the source material which would cascade throughout the show -- and with Invincible being renewed for two more seasons by Amazon Prime, fans can expect more changes in the future.
Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Khary Payton, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder. The series is produced by Skybound, and executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert and Catherine Winder. The first season is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
